Daniel Rosa Nets Game-Winner In The 75th Minute As Men's Soccer Defeats Mount Saint Vincent On Wednesday

Junior goalkeeper Tyler Solis records a career-high 13 stops

Riverdale, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team and the College of Mount Saint Vincent were in a virtual stalemate for the majority of the match until the 75th minute of the contest when newcomer Daniel Rosa found the equalizer to lift the Bloodhounds past the Dolphins, 1-0, on Wednesday evening.

Dating back to the 1998 season, this marks the first time that the Bloodhounds have started a season 2-0. In 2010, John Jay dropped the opener before rattling off four straight wins (Purchase, Maritime, Mount Saint Mary, and Medgar Evers).

With tonight's victory over the Dolphins, John Jay moves to 1-0-1 all-time against Mount Saint Vincent, as these two schools last met on September 15, 2012, a 1-1 tie.

"This was a great game to be a part of and a lot credit goes to College of Mount Saint Vincent," commented head coach Zade Haobsh." We were very happy to get the win as it was a massive team effort, starting from Tyler (Solis) in goal all the way up to the forward line.

In the early moments of the 75th minute, Rosa came on for reigning CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week, Kevin Luciano

The Bloodhounds had a chance soon after as Nicolas DiBetta rocketed a shot but was turned aside by CMSV's Joel Luna. Following the corner kick, newcomer Michael Akinlotan settled the ball and found Rosa, who blasted one past Luna for the game's first tally.

For both Rosa and Akinlotan, it marked their first collegiate points with Rosa netting his first career goal and Akinlotan's adding his first assist in a Bloodhound uniform.

"We're still not a finished product on field and will be looking to continue to improve in every moment of the game," added Haobsh

John Jay junior goalkeeper Tyler Solis was tested early and often by the Dolphins' offense. In a span of nearly 14 minutes, the Farmingdale, NY native recorded seven saves.

The Bloodhounds had their best opportunity of the first half in the 32' as Joshua Escobar had a scoring opportunity that was denied by Luna.

With three minutes remaining before intermission, Junior Guaman, who notched two assists in the opener against St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn, fired off a chance but Luna was there for the stop.

When play resumed for the second half, it was the Bloodhounds who pushed the tempo early in the half, as Luciano sent a shot on target but Luna was there to corral the attempt.

The CUNYAC Player of the Week created an opportunity for the visitors to score the first goal of the match but Luna was able to make the save in the 53'.

Solis stopped a scoring chance from CMSV as Oscar Billman tried to push one past the third year goalkeeper to no avail in the 62'.

On the ensuing Dolphins' possession, CMSV had created space as Billman lined up for a shot that was thwarted by the Bloodhounds' defender, setting up a corner for the home team.

Solis remained on his toes in the later stages of the contest, turning away an attempt by Ian Lamas in the 79' before Billman's rebound opportunity was blocked inside the box.

In the final minutes of the contest, Sebastian Mesa tried his luck against Solis, with the Bloodhounds netminder craftly sending the shot away before Billman had on final chance, but Solis was there for the stop.

For the match, Luciano led the way for John Jay with five shots, two of which were on target. Guaman, Mario Parano, and DiBetta also added a shot attempt.

Solis finished the night stopping a career-high 13 saves. His counterpart, Luna, was credited with five saves.

CMSV was led by Billman, who attempted eight shots with four reaching the target. Lamas produced six shot attempts while tying Billman with four shots on goal.

The Dolphins outshot the Bloodhounds, 21-11 and a 13-6 margin on shots on goal. CMSV took eight corners to John Jay's three attempts.

John Jay will continue their road trip on Saturday, as the Bloodhounds head to Morristown, NJ to tangle with the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles for a noon kickoff.
