Milestone Night For Garrison Watkins Lifts Men's Basketball Past Medgar Evers On Friday

Brooklyn, NY - Graduate guard Garrison Watkins enjoyed a milestone night as he became the 14th John Jay men's basketball player to score 1,000 points as the Bloodhounds hung on for an 80-78 road victory at Medgar Evers on Friday evening. 
 
John Jay moves to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in CUNYAC play while the Cougars falter to 2-16 overall and remain winless in conference play (0-7). 
 
Watkins was one of three players to score in double-figures as the Staten Island, NY native recorded a career-high 31 points on a sweltering 11 of 20 shooting performance from the field. 
 
In the process, he also registered his 15th career double-double, grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds. 
 
Watkins reached the 1,000 career point milestone at the 7:59 mark of the second half, as he stepped up to the free-throw line and sank the first of a one-and-one. 
 

 

 
Jordan Evelyn came within a point of matching his career-high as he finished 19 points while Adrian Kopec rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 points. 
 
Medgar Evers also had three players score in double figures, led by Joshua Jean Pierre whoe finish with a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. 
 
Nicholas Guillen netted 21 points and came within one assist of a double-double while Michael Perez added 11 points in his 29 minutes of action.

The Bloodhounds withstood an early 5-0 deficit as they answered back with seven points following a three-pointer from TJ Chisolm, which sparked a 17-2 run by the visitors, capped by a Jamir Stewart three-pointer at the 14:03 mark. 
 
John Jay increased their lead to 27-17 with 7:48 left to play in the first half as Kopec dialed up triple from Evelyn. 
 
The Cougars staged a 12-2 run of their own in taking a 30-29 lead following a Guillen layup but Evelyn quickly responded with a layup of his own on the opposite end. 
 
John Jay scored eight of the final 13 points in the first half to take a 39-36 lead into the break. 
 
The visitors jumped out to a six-point lead, 44-38, as Kopec once again found the range from the outside. 
 
The two teams were pitted in a chess match, trading baskets over the next several possessions, before the Cougars seized control and built 64-57 lead with 9:26 left in regulation. 
 
Watkins would score the next four points, which included the milestone free-throw for his 1,000th career point at the 7:59 mark. The two made freebies brought John Jay to within one, 64-63. 
 
The next nine points by the Bloodhounds came from Watkins himself, as he knotted the game up at 68 with a pair of makes from the charity stripe. 
 
Evelyn gave John Jay the lead, 70-68, with 4:46 showing on the clock before Jerome Hodges banked home the layup to tie the score. 
 
One of the biggest shots to hit for John Jay came with 3:14 left to play as Stewart hit on a three-pointer that increased the lead to three before Watkins added another hoop. 
 
John Jay saw their lead shrink to just a single possession, following the completed three-point play from Pierre. 
 
Kopec was fouled and made one of two from the line, as John Jay held a 80-77 advantage. The Cougars got the ball back as Pierre was fouled by Kopec, but he only made one of two from the line. 
 
With 1.2 showing on the clock, James Bradberry was able to deflect the incoming pass as the Bloodhounds snapped a four-game losing streak. 
 
The Bloodhounds shot close to 40.0 percent from the field but Medgar held the visitors to just 26.1 percent from the outside. 
 
John Jay closes their three-game road trip on Tuesday, January 23 at York for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
