Men's Basketball Drops Conference Contest to Visiting Hunter Hawks

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team returned to home court on Friday night for the first time in nearly two weeks to host the surging Hunter Hawks.

Despite a competitive opening stretch, the Hawks outpaced the host Bloodhounds, 80-67.

Jordan Evelyn recorded 12 points in the CUNYAC contest on Friday night, his eighth game this season with at least that many points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bloodhounds notched the first three-pointer of the evening in the opening 90 seconds of the contest, as Isaac Holmes found Jamir Stewart open on the perimeter to give the hosts their inital lead. After a quick offensive flash by Hunter, Stewart pulled John Jay back within one point of the lead at the free throw line, 9-10, headed into the under-16 media timeout.

Enable by repeated Bloodhound turnovers, the Hawks were able to extended their first half advantage out of that timeout with a 13-4 scoring run. A second run of 13 points put Hunter in the drivers seat head to the halftime break. In the final four minutes, the Bloodhound offense showed some fight as TJ Chisholm, Garrison Watkins and Daniel Reyes all contributed on conseuctive possessions for a 7-0 run.

That stretched trimmed the Hawks advantage to just ten points and Hunter headed to the locker room leading, 40-28.

Stewart brought the deficit down to single digits to open the second half as he drained another three pointer to kickstart the scoring.

The Hawks' success from beyond the arc continued to beleaguer the Bloodhounds, as the visitors shot above .440 from three-point range for just the fifth game this season. They answered the opening salvo to double their lead with ten consecutive points in the opening four minutes.

Despite the Hunter advantage remaining in double-digits for the remainder of the contest, a total of ten Bloodhounds made their way on the scorescheet by the final horn. John Jay closed the game on an 8-1 run, hitting three of its final four shots from the field.

NEXT UP: The CUNYAC homestand continues in The Doghouse on Tuesday night, Jan. 30 as John Jay welcomes Baruch to the west side of Manhattan. Tip-off as part of a doubleheader is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
