Women's Basketball Extends Winning Streak To Six Straight With Home Triumph Over Hunter On Friday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team posted their sixth straight triumph, defeating the Hunter College Hawks, 80-61, on Friday evening from The Doghouse. 
 
With the victory, the Bloodhounds move to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) and secured the season sweep of the Hawks, who fall to 8-11 and 4-4 in league play. 
 
Kamryn Hammond registered her second 30-point outing of the season, as the Poughkeepsie, NY native tallied 30 points on 11 of 16 shooting, highlighted by a 5 of 8 marksmanship from three-point range. It marked her fourth straight double-figure scoring performance and the 15th time this season. She also added seven rebounds (six on the defensive end) while dishing out four assists and recording two steals in 35 minutes of action. 
 
Chayanne Kelly was the second Bloodhound to score in double-figures, as she finished with 23 points on 9 of 17 shooting. Kelly dished out seven assists and notched four steals in 35 minutes. Ashley Zeolla corralled her fourth double-digit rebounding total of season, and 11th time in her career as she finished with 12 caroms, while adding nine points. Ayanna Edwards also contributed on the boards, securing eight boards in her 24 minutes. 
 
Hunter had two players score in double-digits, as Alexa Charles netted 22 points on 10 of 22 shooting while also posting a double-double, finishing with 15 rebounds. Charles added six steals and an assist in 31 minutes. Nina Hennessy chipped 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting while dishing out four assists and a steal in her 27 minutes of play. 

Hunter's Eliah Yode started the contest off with a jumper before Hammond put the Bloodhounds on the board with a layup. Hennessy gave the visitors a 5-4 lead before John Jay outscored the Hawks, 17-14, over the final 5:22 in claiming a 21-19 lead. Hammond and Zeolla combined to score 13 of the 17 points during the run. 
 
Zeolla commenced the second quarter with a three-pointer off the feed from Hammond that pushed the Bloodhounds' lead to five, 24-19. Charles answered back with the next five points to even the game at 24 at the 7:42 mark. 
 
John Jay staged a 13-6 run over the next 3:47, as they converted 5 of 8 from the field, as Hammond capped the run with a layup for her 11th point of the night they claimed a 37-30. Hunter scored eight of the final 15 points of the quarter, but Kelly beat the first half horn with a layup, as John Jay took a 44-38 lead into the break. 
 
The Hawks scored five of the first seven points of the second half, as Hennessy brought Hunter to within three, 46-43. The Bloodhounds ignited a 15-0 run over a five-minute span, as they hit on 6 of 9 from the floor in building a 61-43 advantage. Hammond netted nine of the 15 points for the home team during this run. 
 
The two teams split the final 14 points of the stanza as the Bloodhounds held a firm 18-point lead, 68-50. In the third quarter, John Jay converted on 62.5 percent from the field (10 of 16). The Bloodhounds converted 11 points off six turnovers by the Hawks as they outscored the opposition, 24-12, in the frame.
 
John Jay took their largest lead of the contest following a pair of free throws made by Kelly at the 4:45. Hunter netted five of the final seven points but the Bloodhounds secured their sixth straight victory. 
 
For the game, John Jay hit on 51.8 percent from the field (29 of 56) while holding the Hawks to just 32.4 percent. The Bloodhounds hit on 9 of 18 from the outside. John Jay held a 46-38 edge on the boards, highlighted by a 34-20 margin on the defensive glass. 
 
The Bloodhounds will look for their seventh straight victory on Tuesday, January 30, as John Jay welcomes Baruch to The Doghouse. Tuesday evening is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night with tipoff between the two teams set for 6:00 p.m.
