Women's Basketball Collects Seventh Straight Victory; Defeats Baruch 74-61 On Tuesday Evening

New York, NY - In a pivotal CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup, the John Jay women's basketball extended their season-high win streak to seven straight as the Bloodhounds secured the regular-season sweep of Baruch, defeating the Bearcats, 74-61, at The Doghouse on Tuesday evening. 
 
John Jay (13-6; 7-1 CUNYAC) had five players score in double-figures, led by Chayanne Kelly, who poured in a team-high 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out seven assists and recording a steal in here 35 minutes of action. 
 
Kamryn Hammond notched her seventh double-double of the season and ninth of her career as she scored 13 points while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds in 32 minutes of work. 
 
Ayanna Edwards recorded her fifth double-digit scoring game of the season as the junior floor general contributed 12 points while collecting five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block in 31 minutes. 
 
Michaela Lattimore finished with 11 points on an effective 5 of 10 shooting from the floor while grabbing seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal in 12 minutes of play. 
 
Rounding out the Bloodhound performances was Ashley Zeolla, who netted 10 points and corralled seven rebounds, a game-high four steals while rejecting two shots in 32 minutes. 
 
Madison Thorton-Lewis was one of three Baruch players to score in double figures as she led the way for the Bearcats pouring in a game-high 19 points while grabbing nine rebounds in 34 minutes. 
 
Elissa Leung netted 12 points while dishing out five assists in playing the full forty minutes. 
 
Mia Castillo, the NCAA Division III leading scorer at 27.6 points per game, was stifled by the Bloodhounds' swarming defense, as she finished with ten points on 3 of 23 shooting from the field and 1 of 9 display from beyond the arc. Castillo filled up the stat sheet, producing a double-double with 12 points and nearly had a triple-double, as she added eight assists, two steals and two blocks in 38 minutes.

"Another solid defensive stance by our team with great contributions from our bench. Natalie (Simonds) and Hadja (Bah) gave us great minutes in a reserve role. Michaela helped spark a run to put in a position to maintain the lead
Baruch raced out to an 8-1 lead, capped by a Leung jumper off the feed from Castillo. Hammond halted the Bearcat run with a triple from the corner, receiving the feed from Edwards that made it 8-4. 
 
The Bearcats outscored the Bloodhounds, 7-5, over the final four minutes with both teams struggling to find their range, shooting a combined 4 of 15 from the floor. 
 
The Bloodhounds held Baruch's leading scorer, Castillo, to a 0-8 start in the opening frame despite John Jay trailing 15-9 after one. 
 
Edwards sparked a mini 4-0 run of her own as the Bloodhounds opened the second quarter down 15-13 following a pair of makes from the line. 
 
Baruch increased their lead, thanks to an 11-5 spurt over a 2:12 span that saw the visitors convert on a perfect 5 of 5 from the field with Mitchell scoring six points during the run as they lead 26-18. 
 
Michaela Lattimore muscled in two after grabbing the loose ball on a misfired three-pointer from Kelly and John Jay found themselves trailing by six, 26-20, at the 6:17 mark. 
 
Lattimore continued to be the Bloodhounds' catalyst, scoring John Jay's next four points, closing the gap to 26-24 with 4:29 left to play before halftime. 
 
Off the inbounds, Simonds found herself wide open from the wing and drilled a three-pointer that made it a single-possession lead for the visitors, 29-27. 
 
Leung misfired on a three-pointer that Ruberto was able to grab and find Edwards, who cruised past her defender on her way to the hoop to tie the game at 29. 
 
Thorton-Lewis buried a three-point on the next possession as Baruch grabbed the lead but with 47 seconds, Zeolla found space in the lane and finished with a left-handed layup that made it 32-31 in favor of Baruch. 
 
In the second quarter, the Bloodhounds held the Bearcats to just 30.4 percent from the floor while Castillo finished the half 0 of 12 from the field and 0 of 4 from the free-throw line in 20 minutes of action. 
 
John Jay scored six of the first eight points which was part of a 16-4 run to commence the third quarter as the Bloodhounds grabbed a 47-38, following a wide-open layup by Simonds and two made freebies by Kelly. 
 
Leung halted the scoring drought from the Bearcats with a three-pointer and Thorton-Lewis followed with another triple that made it a six-point advantage for the Bloodhounds. 
 
Zeolla banked home a layup and drew made the traditional three-point play from the line, as the Bloodhounds went up by nine, 50-41. 
 
Baruch concluded the third quarter netting eight of the final 15 points in the frame with Edwards making the front-end of a two shot foul that gave the Bloodhounds a 54-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 
 
John Jay held Baruch to just 25.0 percent shooting in the frame while holding a 16-9 edge on the glass. 
 
The Bloodhounds began the fourth and final quarter on a 7-0 run as Hannah Ruberto sank a pair of free throws that extended the lead to 61-46. 
 
Castillo made her first points of the game at the 7:14 mark on a left wing three-pointer as Baruch trailed 61-49. 
 
The two teams exchanged points over the final six minutes with John Jay tallying 13 of the 25 points in preserving the 74-61 win for their sixth straight victory over the Bearcats, that started back on February 15, 2022. 
 
John Jay finished the contest shooting close to 40.0 percent from the field while limiting the Bearcats, who shoot 34.6 percent on the season, to just 28.8 percent from the field and 24.2 percent from long distance. 
 
The Bloodhounds wrap up the week with a chance to take the top spot in the CUNYAC standings as John Jay hosts Brooklyn College on Saturday. 
 
The Bulldogs enter Saturday's contest dropping their most recent contest at Hunter (55-49), as the rematch of the last two finals is set for 1:00 p.m.
