Men's Soccer Shines in Senior Day Conference Battle Against York

New York, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team honored its senior class on a blustery Saturday afternoon on Randall's Island.

Eight fourth-year Bloodhounds and graduate students were recognized in a pre-game ceremony before taking on the York College Cardinals.

The Bloodhounds picked up their second CUNY Athletic Conference win of the season with a 8-1 victory over the Cardinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • John Jay kicked off the scoring just four minutes into the first half with senior Damian Coronel's first goal of the season. Sebastian Leja played a cutting ball through the York backline to Daniel Rosa, who slid the ball to Coronel. His shot was deflected and bounced past the Cardinal keeper for the opening tally.
  • Fellow senior Maskym Ivanov doubled the Bloodhound advantage just four minutes later. Kelvin de la Cruz pushed the transition play with a low driving ball to Ivanov, who took the one-on-one advantage against the keeper and deposited his first goal of the match.
  • Captain Jonathan Granados worked his way onto the scoresheet in the 44th minute, converting a free kick from just outside the top right corner of the 18-yard box.
  • The Bloodhounds held a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.
  • York broke the shutout just four minutes into the second half as Jose Recio found Stanley Sanchez streaking down the left flank, with Sanchez burying the chance to cut the Cardinal deficit to 3-1.
  • John Jay's seniors remained engaged into their final 15 minutes together on their day, scoring five goals in the decisive quarter-hour.
  • Daniel Rosa scored twice in the span of five minutes, with Marcel Tova's lone score sandwiched in the middle.
  • Another Daniel, this time da Silva, registered his first goal as a Bloodhound in the 84th minute, settling a rebound off the York keeper.
  • Josh Brayan capped off the day on a give-and-go ball from Brayan Alvarez, scoring the Bloodhounds' eighth goal of the afternoon.
  • Starting goalkeeper Tyler Solis finished the day with five saves and one goal allowed. Solis entered the match with 188 career saves and now just needs seven more stops for 200 in his John Jay career

NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds close out the regular season on the road with three CUNYAC battles, starting with Medgar Evers. Kick-off from Brennan Field in Middle Village on Thursday, Oct. 17 is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
