New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team took the short trip to Lexington Avenue on Thursday night for a top-four CUNY Athletic Conference battle.
The Bloodhounds, coming off a tough mid-week showing against WestConn, traveled to Baruch College for a CUNYAC Championship Semi-final rematch.
John Jay was dominant in the opening set and survived a late push by the Bearcats to ensure the clean sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bloodhounds' collective foot was on the gas from the first point in the set, leading for the entirety.
Rookie
Julia Stuart came up with a pair of early points, logging a kill and helping on the block with
Paige Sadowitz to cap a four-point swing and take a 9-3 lead.
Sadowitz's fellow middle,
Madison Reyes, scored a pair of successful swings to cap another 4-0 run and extend the advantage to 16-8.
Stuart clinched the first set win with kills on two of the last three points, giving the Bloodhounds a 25-15 victory.
The freshman, playing her first CUNYAC match since Sept. 26, finished the opening set with four kills and one block.
Stuart and Sadowitz were in the groove again in the second set. After Baruch picked up the first two points, the Bloodhounds scored 11 of the next 14 points. Sadowitz scored a block and an ace in that run, with Stuart adding two kills after being added to the lineup.
The Iowa native converted three swings on the closing stretch to help secure a 25-16 win in the middle frame. She finished with six kills in the set and one block. Sadowitz added two blocks and two aces.
Head coach
Austin Voges introduced new faces to the proceedings in the third set, including
Malia Reyes,
Alex Overkamp and
Nina Bongiovanni. The new-look group trailed by as many as five points late, 15-19.
A pair of Baruch attack errors and an ace by
Josanne Lewis cut the lead to 19-17. The Bloodhound attack responded to the three-point swing and gave the visitors the lead with a resilient showing, as
Reilly Catan and
Nina Bongiovanni combined for three kills and
Ellmedina Hodzic logged an improbable service ace.
Baruch briefly retook the lead, 22-23, but Sadowitz and Catan stood firm at the net and Sadowitz clinched the win with her third kill of the night.
