Men's Soccer Opens Up Conference Play With 1-0 Home Win Over Hunter

New York, NY - In a virtual stalemate for much of the opening half of the conference lidlifter between John Jay and Hunter it was the Bloodhounds that found the equalizer as John Jay posted a 1-0 triumph over the Hawks on Wednesday evening.

The Bloodhounds move to 2-6-1 overall while Hunter moves to 2-7-1 on the season.

The Hawks tested Davio Rossi-Levin early, with the Pairs, Francis native able to make the first of his three saves seven minutes into the contest.

Brayan Alvarez attempted a free kick from approximately 30 yards out from the top of the box but Matthew Heimowitz was there for the stop. The Bloodhounds rattled off a pair of shots, with Heimowitz making the save in the 28' off a shot from Sebastian Leja.

In the 33', the visitors had a chance as Bradley Espejo had his shot block off the free kick. Veteran John Jay captain Jonathan Granados soared up to record the block, keeping the match scoreless.

With just four minutes left before halftime, the Bloodhounds were rewarded. Heimowitz came out his spot and misplayed the ball. Alertly, Alejandro De Jesus was there to collect the ball and blast a chance to the empty net as John Jay went ahead 1-0 on De Jesus' first career goal.

When play resumed for the second half, the two teams traded chances, as the Hawks' Musa Feseru's shot went high before a header chance from Ben Avakook went wide.

De Jesus was going for his second score of the match, but his attempt was blocked in the 58'. The Hawks went on the offensive, as two of their attempts went high of the goal while Espejo's chance in the 66' was blocked.

Hunter's final chance came in the 84' as Salell Eldin soared high for the chance inside the box but Rossilevin was there for the stop.

Both teams attempted 12 shots with the Bloodhounds firing off five on target to Hunter's three. Rossi-Levin finished with three saves while his counterpart, Heimowitz, made four saves.
