Men's Basketball Defeats Sarah Lawrence On Final Day Of Academic Classic On Saturday

Bronxville, NY - For the first time since the 2011-12 season, the John Jay men's basketball team has started 2-0 as the Bloodhounds defeated the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 61-44, on the final day of the Academic Classic.
 
Syl Granda was the lone Bloodhound in double-figures, as he finished with a team-best 14 points on 5 of 11 shooting, which included 3 of 4 from three-point range.
 
Omar Calderon added nine points in 16 minutes while hitting on 3 of 5 from the floor and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line.
 
Lemar Fulmore was the lone Gryphon in double-digits as he finished with 11 points, hitting 9 of 10 from the free-throw line.
 
Trailing 4-0, John Jay used a 12-4 burst over ten minutes to take a four-point lead, 12-8, as the stifling Bloodhounds defense held Sarah Lawrence to just 1 of 17 shooting during this time.
 
Over the final seven minutes, John Jay outscored Sarah Lawrence, 16-11, in which Calderon scored seven of his nine points as the Bloodhounds finished shooting 7 of 9 during this time and led 28-19 before Braden Burman hit a jumper before the first half horn as the visitors led 28-21.
 
John Jay opened the second half scoring ten of the first 15 points in building a 38-26 advantage following a Jordan Evelyn layup at the 12:31 mark. The Bloodhounds continued to limit the scoring chances for Sarah Lawrence, as the Gryphons shot 4 of 16 down the stretch, which included a 3 of 13 display from three-point range during this time.
 
For the game, John Jay shot 45.1 percent from the floor while holding Sarah Lawrence to just 19.7 percent shooting. The Bloodhounds connected on 40.9 from the outside while shutting down the opportunities from Sarah Lawrence (12.5 percent).  
 
Despite being outrebounded 42-37 and 21-8 on the offensive boards, John Jay scored 15 points off 12 turnovers and netted 28 points inside the paint.
 
The Bloodhounds will look for their third straight win when they play their first home contest of the season as they welcome the New Paltz Hawks to the Doghouse on November 13 at 7:00 p.m.
