Women's Basketball Falls To Amherst On Homecoming

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team played host to Amherst College Mammoths for the Bloodhounds' 2024 Homecoming. The Bloodhounds had two players score double figures but fell to the Mammoths, 88-47, at The Doghouse.

Today's matchup was the first time these two schools have met nearly 21 years to the day - Nov. 21, 2003, when they played at Poughkeepsie, NY.

Senior guard Ashley Zeolla tallied a team-high 18 points while securing five rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes of action. With her performance this afternoon, Zeolla is rapidly approaching a milestone, as she is a mere 153 points away from reaching 1,000 in her career. Additionally, she is 37 rebounds shy of 600.

Ayanna Edwards was the second Bloodhound to reach double-figures, as the Huntington Station, NY native tallied 11 points. Alexis Jones added nine points while Briana Minick thrived on the boards, corralling a team-best ten caroms in 20 minutes of play.

Four Mammoth players hit for double-digits, led by Kori Barach, who played the full forty in finishing with a game-high 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field while hitting 4 of 7 from three-point range. Barach added five steals and five boards.

Elizabeth Cain netted 18 points on 7 of 10 shootings, while Sylvia Liddle and Annie McCarthy combined for 26 points on 7 of 15 shootings from the floor and 8 of 10 from the free throw line. McCarthy led the way with nine rebounds.

Maya Cwalina, who finished with eight points, filled up the stat sheet as she grabbed seven rebounds, dished out seven assists, collected a steal, and rejected five shots.

The Mammoths raced out to an early advantage, hitting on 73.3 percent from the field in the opening ten minutes (11 of 15) while limiting John Jay to just three made field goals.

In the third quarter, the Bloodhounds sparked a run of their own, hitting on 6 of 7 attempts over three minutes with five players scoring, capped by a Zeolla driving layup at the 5:09 mark.

The Bloodhounds begin a short, two-game road stint on Saturday, November 30, when John Jay travels to Riverdale to square against the University of Mount Saint Vincent.

Tipoff is set for noon.
