Women's Hoops Drops 2024 Finale At St. Joseph's University - Long Island On Monday

Patchogue, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team dropped the final game of 2024, 66-57, to St. Joseph's University - Long Island.

John Jay (2-9) had two players score in double-figures, led by Ashley Zeolla, who netted a team-leading 20 points on 7 of 15 shooting while coming up one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine, seven on the defensive end.

Ayanna Edwards, the Huntington Station, NY native, finished with 11 points while dishing out four assists. Michaela Lattimore had nine points, seven rebounds, three steals, a block, and a steal in 14 minutes of play.

Charlotte Twohig led the way for the Golden Eagles (9-3), finishing with a game-best 23 points on 8 of 16 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists in 33 minutes. Megan Spina added 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting while logging 36 minutes of play.

The Bloodhounds opened the contest with back-to-back baskets from Zeolla and Lattimore. The Golden Eagles responded with eight straight points following Kelly's hitting on the backend of a two-shot foul.

St. Joseph's University - Long Island doubled their lead, 12-6, on a Spina jumper. The visitors got to within one as Edwards banked in a layup before setting up Jones for a three-pointer. SJLI closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run, hitting on 3 of 4 from the field, which included a jumper by Spina with 1:02 left in the frame as they led 19-11. Both squads shot over 40.0 percent in the opening quarter, with the Bloodhounds holding a 9-8 edge on the boards.

The Golden Eagles scored nine of the first 14 points in the quarter, hitting on 4 of 8 from the field, with Twohig connecting on a jumper that made it 28-16 at the 5:43 mark. The Bloodhounds answered with a 9-4 run after Hadja Bah made two from the free-throw line. Spina hit one of two from the line as the Golden Eagles entered the break with a 32-25 lead.  

John Jay took control of the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring SJLI 12-6 over the first 7:06, as they trailed by one, 38-37, following Edwards hitting on a layup and completing the three-point play from the line. The two teams traded points, with Zeolla putting home a left-handed layup offEdwards'e pass as the Bloodhounds trailed by one again, 40-39. The Golden Eagles closed the quarter on a 7-2 run as their lead increased to 47-41.

John Jay nearly completed their comeback attempt, sparking a 9-5 run to start the fourth quarter to get to within two, 52-50, as Briana Minick first stole the ball away from Spina and hit on the layup on the other end. The Golden Eagles put the game out of reach, as they staged a 14-5 run over the next 4:34, limiting the Bloodhounds to just one made field goal.

The two teams shot close to 40.0 percent for the game (John Jay - 37.7% | SJLI - 38.7%). 

The Bloodhounds open 2025 at The Doghouse on January 6 as they welcome Wesleyan University (CT).
