Women's Basketball Falls In First Game Of 2025 To Visiting Wesleyan On Monday Evening

New York, NY - The John Jay women's basketball dropped their first game of the new year, falling to the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals, 84-47, at The Doghouse on Monday evening in their non-conference finale.

Senior guard Ashley Zeolla was one of two Bloodhounds to score in double-figures as the Yorktown Heights, NY native finished with 12 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. She added a team-high two blocks in 29 minutes of action. 
Sophomore forward Michaela Lattimore added 10 points while corralling four rebounds and a block in her 27 minutes of play. Ayanna Edwards chipped in eight points with two assists and two steals. The freshman trio of Briana Minick, Alexis Jones, and Morgan Kimmi grabbed 12 rebounds combined, with Minick and Kimmi each pulling down five caroms while Jones added a team-best three steals. 

Four Cardinals finished in double figures, led by Felicia Fongemie, who netted a game-high 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field and 3 of 5 from three-point range. Meghan Kirck contributed 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting while hitting on 4 of 6 from long range. Olivia Quinn matched Kirck with 14 points while narrowly recording a triple-double, concluding the contest with nine assists and eight rebounds in 32 minutes of work. Tori DaCosta was the fourth Cardinal in double-figures with 13 points and tied Quinn with eight rebounds. 

The visitors jumped to a 6-2 lead before Edwards and Zeolla converted back-to-back baskets for the Bloodhounds, tying the score at 6-6. Wesleyan scored nine of the final 15 points in the quarter, as John Jay remained close, trailing 15-12. The Bloodhounds shot a slightly higher percentage than the visitors in the opening quarter while holding a 12-7 edge on the boards. 

John Jay seized control in the early portion of the second quarter, utilizing a 6-2 run to take their first lead of the contest, 18-17, as Natalie Simonds drilled her second straight three-pointer, this time off the feed from Edwards. Fongemie put the visitors ahead for the time on a driving layup before Zeolla managed to bank in two, putting John Jay ahead, 20-19, with 5:39 to go before halftime. Wesleyan regained their composure to close out the quarter on a 14-1 run, capped by a Kirck three-pointer that increased the Cardinals' lead to 33-21. 

As play resumed for the third quarter, the Cardinals knocked in back-to-back three-pointers, elevating their run to 20-1 before Edwards lofted a left-handed jumper in the paint to halt the run. The Cardinals continued to find the shooter's touch for the remainder of the quarter, hitting on 7 of 11 over the final 6:54 of the period while limiting John Jay to just two made field goals over that stretch, an and-one conversion from Hadja Bah and put-back layup from Essence Richardson with 1:28 remaining.

The two teams had their best shooting performances in the final quarter, with John Jay hitting 44.4 percent from the field while Wesleyan converted 53.3 percent from the floor. Zeolla, Lattimore, and Richardson combined to score 15 of the 19 points during the frame, while DaCosta was the offensive catalyst for the Cardinals, scoring seven of the 22 points.

Both teams committed 13 turnovers, with the Cardinals scoring 19 points off John Jay's mishaps. The Bloodhounds recorded ten steals in the contest,

The Bloodhounds will resume CUNYAC play beginning on Wednesday, January 8, as they will travel to Jamaica, NY, to tangle with York College.
