Hot Shooting Night Propels Men's Hoops To Wire-To-Wire Victory Over Medgar Evers In Regular-Season Finale On Senior Night

New York, NY - The John Jay men's basketball team wrapped up the 2023-24 season on Senior Night with a 92-67 home triumph over the Medgar Evers College Cougars on Wednesday evening.
 
John Jay (7-18; 3-11 CUNYAC) had six players score in double-figures on the evening, led by graduate guard and Senior Night honoree, Garrison Watkins, who finished his illustrious Bloodhound career with 30 points on 11 of 21 shooting.

"Tonight, was all about Garrison, and man – he really showed up. So proud of him and how he was able to cap off his 103rd game as a Bloodhound. He was a big part of our most successful team in program history, a 1,000 point scorer and a leader throughout it all. His legacy will be remembered and talked about often, he impacted so many people on and off the court."
The Staten Island, NY native connected on a career-high six three-pointers in nine chances while finishing with his ninth double-double of the season (19th for career), as he corralled 13 rebounds in the win. Isaac Holmes and Jordan Evelyn each finished with 14 points on a combined 9 of 13 shooting from the floor while Holmes hit on 4 of 7 from the outside. Evelyn led the way with a team-high six assists.  Jamir Stewart added 12 points while Daniel Reyes and Jeremiah Cardi each finished with 10 points. 
 
Michael Perez and Derek Wicker each netted double-digits for the visitors, with Perez tallying 17 points on 6 of 14 shooting. He finished with six rebounds, six assists, two steals, and one block in 34 minutes of action. Wicker came within one rebound of a double-double, as he corralled nine boards while dishing out an assist in his 21 minutes of work. 

John Jay jumped out to an early 9-2 advantage as Watkins dialed up the first of his six trifectas. The early run was part of a larger 19-9 outburst which the Bloodhounds used to bump the lead to 30-13, following a second three-pointer from Watkins at the 7:32 mark. The Bloodhounds closed out the first half outscoring the Cougars, 23-12, with Watkins spearheading the offense with 11 points. 
 
John Jay shot a blistering 53.3 percent from the floor in the opening twenty minutes, in which they also connected on 7 of 15 from the outside and held the visitors to just a 3 of 14 display from deep (21.4 percent), as the Bloodhounds led 53-25 at the break. 

The Bloodhounds carried the momentum into the second half, staging a 15-5 run over the first 5:02 to take their largest lead of the contest, 68-30. Holmes sparked the offense with nine points, as John Jay went 5 of 10 from the field and 3 of 6 from the outside while limiting Medgar Evers to just one made field goal in eight chances. 

The Cougars found find their shooting touch, as they erupted on a 16-7 outburst of their own, which lasted 4:35 as Perez netted 12 of the 16 points, capped by a three-pointer at the 9:34 mark. 

John Jay scored 17 of the final 38 points to secure the 92-67 home triumph as Watkins, in his 103rd career game, netted his second 30-point performance of the season and of his career.
