Bronx, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team (5-1, 2-0 CUNYAC) heads into the weekend with a win, knocking off CUNYAC foe Lehman (2-5, 0-1 CUNYAC), 3-0, on Thursday night.
The win at The Apex marks the third consecutive match the Bloodhounds have held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage (-.032). John Jay logged a season-high against CUNYAC competition with 34 total kills.
Akashdeep Singh opened the scoring with a kill on the first point of the match. Singh finished with a season-high 13 kills and .367 hitting percentage. He completed the double-double with 15 digs on the night.
While totaling 19 assists for the match,
Alex Bridgelall recorded one of his two kills to push lead to the highest of the first set, 16-8. Service aces from Bridgelall and
Logan Ramos helped secure a decisive 25-15 win in the opening stanza.
That combo came up key in the opening points of the second set, overcoming the Bloodhounds first deficit of the match. After an early 2-1 hole, a kill by Ramos and a pair of Bridgelall aces pushed the Bloodhounds advantage to 8-4 and maintained the lead for the set.
The John Jay attack made it two straight sets hitting above .220, as Ramos led the way with a season-high .467 hitting percentage with eight kills.
The visitors stacked points and mounted another double-digit advantage, holding on to win the the second set 25-19.
Bridgelall secured a third straight outing with at least seven aces in the win, finishing with a game-high eight total.
The Bloodhounds played from behind to start the final set with a new lineup taking the floor.
Jeferson Avila-Macancela served a pair of aces to cap a 5-0 run and give the Bloodhounds a 9-7 third set lead.
After the Lighting tied the set for a second time, the Bloodhounds pushed ahead, scoring seven consecutive points en route to a 20-12 win.
Jaden Lamarre recorded his first career block as a Bloodhound in the run with Avila-Macancela adding a pair of kills and a block.
John Jay held off Lehman's late push while playing for match points and earned a 25-18 third set win to secure the win.
The Bloodhounds return to the floor on Sunday, Feb. 18 for the Old Westbury tri-match, facing SUNY Poly at 12:00 p.m. and the hosts at 2:00 p.m.
