Women's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season With Road Victory At York On Thursday Evening

Jamaica, NY - The John Jay women's basketball team closed out the 2023-24 regular season with a 63-34 road triumph at York on Thursday evening. 
 
With the win, the Bloodhounds finish the year at 18-7 and 12-2 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play. 
 
John Jay will officially be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Women's Basketball Championship, and will have a first-round bye with the semifinals set for Tuesday, February 20 at 6:00 p.m. 
 
York concludes the season at 0-18 and 0-11 in conference games. 
 
Three Bloodhounds scored in double-figures on the evening, led by junior guard Ashely Zeolla, who finished with a team-high 13 points. The Yorktown Heights, NY native finished one rebound shy of a double-double, as she grabbed nine caroms (seven defensive) while adding three assists, a block and a steal in 25 minutes of play. 
 
Michaela Lattimore recorded her third double-double of the season, as the first-year forward finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Morristown, NJ native dished out three assists, while adding a block and a steal in 19 minutes of action. 
 
Ayanna Edwards was the third Bloodhound to reach double-digits, as she matched Lattimore with 10 points on an efficient 5 of 9 shooting. Edwards grabbed three rebounds, recorded four assists in 13 minutes. Sarah Granados logged a career-high 22 minutes while matching Zeolla with a team and career-best nine rebounds against the Cardinals. 
 
Alicia Gumbs led all scorers on the evening with 23 points on 7 of 20 shooting. She finished with a double-double, pulling down 13 rebounds while also adding three steals, a steal and a block. 
 
The Bloodhounds opened the contest hitting on 10 of their first 18 shots in building a 21-2 lead, which was capped by a jumper from Hadja BahGumbs scored the last five points of the quarter as John Jay held a 21-7 advantage. The visitors shot a blistering 52.6 percent from the field while holding the Cardinals to just two made field goals (2 of 19). 
 
The Bloodhounds carried that momentum into the second quarter as they built a 12-1 run over a 6:27 span as Zeolla banked home a layup off the feed from Granados at the 2:46 mark, expanding the lead to 33-8. The Cardinals scored five of the final nine points in the stanza, as the Bloodhounds took a 37-13 halftime lead.
 
Lattimore opened the third quarter with five straight points for the Bloodhounds, as they increased their lead to 42-13. York finished the quarter netting 12 of the last 20 points with Gumbs scoring seven points with Madison Plaza burying a jumper off the feed from Nadaysia Nivar with forty-seconds left in the quarter. 
 
John Jay entered the fourth quarter with 50-25 advantage as they sparked an 8-3 run to open the stanza, as Granados banked in a layup that increased the lead to 58-28 with 4:24 left. 
 
Both teams finished the game with two made field goals but the Bloodhounds secured their 18th win of the season and solidified the second seed in the upcoming CUNYAC tournament. John Jay finished the game shooting 35.0 percent from the field (28 of 80) while holding a 55-36 margin on the boards.
