Bloodhounds Walk-Off In Extra Innings To Earn Split In Opening Day Twinbill Against Mount Saint Vincent On Sunday Afternoon

Bronx, NY - The John Jay baseball team opened their 2024 season with a thrilling walk-off win to split their doubleheader at Houlihan Park against the University of Mount Saint Vincent, as the Bloodhounds edged the Dolphins, 4-3, in game two after falling in the opener, 10-1. 
 

 
Both teams stand at 1-1 following today's results as it marked Opening Day for both ball clubs.

"It was a good team response in game two. A relentless effort paid dividends for us today. The pitching staff was excellent and we got offensive contributions up and down the lineup. We will enjoy the win today but will turn our attention to our upcoming trip to Myrtle Beach beginning Tuesday." 
 
Game One | John Jay 1, Mount Saint Vincent 10
The Bloodhounds were held to just one run at the official start of the season, as the Dolphins scored four times in the opening frame and tacked on three more over the fifth and sixth innings in picking up the win. Newcomers Axel Kappes III, Quentin Bowman, Hayden Tackett, Isaac Salazar, and Vincent Gangone registered their first hits as Bloodhounds with Bowman delivering the lone run of the contest for the home team. 
 
UMSV's Will Granata paced the Dolphins with three hits, three runs scored, and drove in three RBIs in his four plate appearances. Dom Porto, and Johnny Brucato each had two hits with Brucato and Joshua McCormick each bringing in two RBIs. 
 
Mike Mauro suffered the loss after giving up four runs on five hits over three innings of walk. Mauro didn't walk a batter and recorded two strikeouts in his first start of the season. Marc Weeks went 2.1 innings in his season debut as he allowed four runs on three hits while walking two batters and striking out three batters. 

Newcomers Sean Lynch and Alvy Grullon made their first appearances of the season, throwing a combined 1.2 innings with Grullon registering his first career strikeout. 

Sean Kennedy allowed three hits over four scoreless innings in picking up his first win of the season as he fanned four batters. Granata tossed two innings in relief, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two and yielding two free passes. Alex Alvarez worked a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit in the four batters that he faced to help secure the visitors' triumph. 

The Dolphins commenced the game with a four-run first inning. Brucato sent a one-out single to right before stealing second. Granata tripled to left center which plated home the first run of the year.  A hit-by-pitch to Eric Zimmermann gave the Dolphins a pair of runners before Jason Albert doubled to left center, bringing in Granata who made it 2-0. With two outs, McCormick cleared the bases with a single to left center as Mount Saint Vincent went up 4-0. 

The score remained that way until the top of the fifth. Porto reached first on a bunt single and promptly stole second. The next batter, Brucato, sent an 0-2 single back up the middle as Porto raced around for the fifth run of the contest. With the count at 2-2, Granata lofted a two-run home run over the left centerfield wall, extending the visitors lead to 7-0. 

The Bloodhounds got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Kappes sent a two-out single to right field. Bowman connected on a hard-hit triple that reached the base of the right field wall as Kappes came around to score the first run of the year for the Bloodhounds. John Jay threatened in the frame as Spallin walked to give runners on the corner but was thrown out trying to steal to end the inning. 

Mount Saint Vincent tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth, as Brucato brought in Joey DiNorcia on a RBI grounder to first before Porto scored on a balk by Lynch. Zimmermann doubled down the right field line and scored Granata for the final run by UMSV. 
 
Game Two | John Jay 4, Mount Saint Vincent 3 (8 innings) 

The Bloodhounds faced a three-run deficit after the first two innings but valiantly responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.  
The score remained knotted until bottom of the eighth, when, with the bases loaded, Mauro lofted a fly ball to right field as Bowman tagged up from third and scored the winning run, as the Bloodhounds earned their first win of the year, 4-3. 
 
 
Bowman, Spallin and Jax Gangwish each had two hits in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Mauro drove in two of the four runs for the Bloodhounds with Bowman and Spallin delivering an RBI each. 
 
Sean Jost took the mound and went four innings in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. The second-year right-hander walked two and struck out three batters in taking a no-decision. 

Kappes came on in relief of Jost and hurled 2.1 scoreless frames in which he walked two. In the sixth inning, he stepped up in a big way for the Bloodhounds, finishing with three strikeouts in the sixth to leave the bases loaded for the Dolphins. David Michalski earned his first win of the year in relief of Kappes, firing off 1.2 scoreless frames in posting two strikeouts. 

Stephen Martinez led the Dolphins with two hits while he and Paul Pannullo were each credited with an RBI. Michael Iocco gave up three runs on four hits in his three innings of action, as he struck out two as he also didn't factor into the decision. Aidan Cardenas came on to toss four scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and recorded four strikeouts. Joe Decandia gave up the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. 
 
The Dolphins got on the board first with two runs. Brucato reached on an infield single to short before moving to third on errant throw by Santo AnzaloneGranata walked and moved to third on a second overthrow by the Bloodhounds catcher, as Brucato scored. The next batter, Martinez, laced a 2-0 double to center that plated Granata. UMSV increased their lead to 3-0 on a two-out RBI single to center by Pannullo, as he brought in JT Jimenez from second. 

The Bloodhounds answered back in their half of the third. Gangwish got his first collegiate hit with a single to center field. With one out, Bowman continued his torrid hitting, ripping a triple to left center that plated home Gangwish. The next batter, Spallin, also added an extra base hit to left center, as Bowman trotted home to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. 

Up in the count 1-0, Mauro roped a single to center field and moved to second as the throw home wasn't in time to get Spallin as John Jay knotted the score at 3-3. The Bloodhounds threatened for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth. Kappes doubled to left center but back-to-back strikeouts by Cardenas kept John Jay off the board. 

The Dolphins nearly went ahead in the top of the sixth. Granata led off the inning with a walk. Martinez then singled and moved to second on the throw, giving Mount Saint Vincent runners on second and third and no outs. 

Kappes struck out McCormick for the first out before issuing a walk to Drew Knight. The first-year Bloodhound southpaw rallied back to get Jimenez and pinch-hitter Andrew Farina swinging at strike three, stranding the bases loaded. In the top of the seventh, Kappes gave up an infield single. John Jay went to the bullpen in Michalski. Porto was caught stealing for the first out of the inning.

Michalski then closed the frame with a strikeout of Brucato on three straight pitches. 
In the John Jay seventh, Gangwish laced a double to deep center but was thrown trying to extend it to a triple after a near-perfect rally from the outfield got him. He retired all three batters in the top of the eighth. Decandia came on in relief for Cardenas to start the bottom of the eighth. 

Bowman connected on a first-pitch double to center field. Spallin followed with a single to right as Bowman moved to third. Decandia intentionally walked Anzalone, which loaded the bases for the home team. With the count at 1-1, Mauro sent an opposite field fly to right as Bowman tagged up and slid home for the game-winner, sending the Bloodhounds bench into a frenzy. 

John Jay will spend the week in Myrtle Beach, SC for the Ripken Experience, beginning on February 28, as the Bloodhounds will face Eastern University at 3:00 PM.
