Baseball's Late Surge Not Enough As Bloodhound Drop Opening Game Of Ripken Baseball Experience To Eastern, 13-9, On Wednesday

Myrtle Beach, SC - The John Jay baseball team opened their five-game slate of the Ripken Baseball Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC on Wednesday afternoon against Eastern University. 
 
The Bloodhounds faced a 9-1 deficit before staging a four-run rally in the fifth and then tacked on three more to cut the deficit to 11-8 before the Eagles held on for a 13-9 win. 
 
With today's result, the Bloodhounds fall to 1-2 overall while Eastern moves to 2-2. These two clubs will meet again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. from Griffith Field. 
 
Newcomer Axel Kappes III led the way with three hits, including his first career home run in a Bloodhound uniform.  Fellow newcomer Santo Anzalone had two hits, including his first career round tripper while pacing the club with three RBIs. 
 
Michael Mauro was the third Bloodhound to produce a multi-hit game, finishing with two hits in five chance while driving in an RBI. Quentin Bowman drove in two RBIs while he, along with Kappes III, and Anzalone scored twice apiece. Ryan Cherichella connected on his first collegiate hit after coming on as a pinch-hitter. 
 
Mauro toed the mound for his second start of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in taking the loss (0-2). Michael Luongo made his season debut in relief of Marc Weeks, tossing two innings in which he gave up a run on three hits while striking out two batters. David Michalski, who pitched the eighth, recorded a career-high three strikeouts despite giving up two runs on two hits. 
 
Justin DiCesare led the Eagles with four hits in five at-bats. Trent Macdougall, Robert Del Buono and Evan Barks each had three hits with Macdougall, Del Buono, David Hunsberger and Sean Cottrell driving in two RBIs apiece.
 
Zackary Bollinger took a no-decision in lasting four innings while giving up four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two. 
 
Graham Adams came on in relief and earned the win, going 3.1 innings while giving up one run on four hits and fanning three batters. Owen DeLong earned the save. 

John Jay struck first in the opening frame. Kappes led off with double to left field before moving to third on a deep flyout off the bat of John SpallinWith the count 2-2, Anzalone ripped a single to left center that brought in Kappes, giving the visiting Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles took the lead, 2-1. Two straight singles from MacDougall and Del Buono kicked started the inning for Eastern. Barks grounded out to third, which brought in Macdougall to tie the score. Mauro struck out Hunsberger on four-pitched before DICesare reached on an infield single to third, scoring Del Buono. 

The Eagles increased their lead to 4-1 as Jason Hall tripled to center field which brought in Brock Langlotz, who started the inning with a double to left center. Macdougall lofted a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Hall. 

A wild pitch scored Connor Schilling, who reached on a one-out walk. Macdougall continued his hot approach at the dish, doubling to left field that brought in Hall, making it 6-1. Following a steal of third by MacDougall, Del Buono singled to left that brought in Macdougall, making it a six-run advantage by the Eagles. Hunsberger produced the biggest hit in the frame from Eastern, taking the six-pitch of the at-bat to right field, plating home a pair as the Eagles went up 9-1. 
 
The Bloodhound bats came alive in the top of the fifth. Kappes connected on his first career home run to right field. The next batter, Bowman, took the first pitch he saw to left field as John Jay trailed 9-3. 
 
A single by John Spallin knocked Bollinger from the game. Anzalone stepped and mashed a two-run home run to the deepest part of right center field as the Bloodhounds were within four, 9-5. John Jay continued to threaten as Mauro and Hayden Tackett had two straight singles before Isaac Salazar walked to load the bases. 

Anthony Agosta hit a frozen rope to the third baseman, who alertly dove to the bag and tagging out Mauro for the double play before Jaxen Gangwish ended the frame looking at strike three. 

Eastern doubled up John Jay, taking a 10-5 lead as Barks, who reached on a leadoff single through the left side, scored on a wild pitch. They added one more in the bottom of the seventh as Del Buono doubled to left field that brought in Macdougall, making it 11-5. 

John Jay continued to fight back. In their half of the eighth, Bowman was hit by a pitch before Cherichella recorded his first collegiate hit, a single through the left side. 

A walk to Anzalone loaded the bases for Mauro, who pushed through a single on the right side of the diamond, scoring Bowman as John Jay trailed 11-6. 

Tackett was hit by a pitch that plated home Cherichella, trimming the deficit further before Salazar sent a sac-fly to right, scoring Anzalone but Tackett was doubled up at first to end the frame. In the bottom of the eighth, Eastern collected two more runs as Cottrell clubbed a two-run home run off Michalski, pushing the lead to 13-8. 

In the top of the ninth, Anthony Agosta led off with a walk. Gangwish reached on fielder's choice before Kappes III singled to center, giving John Jay runners on the corner with just one out. Bowman beat out the throw to first as Gangwish scored with the Bloodhounds trailing 13-9 but Cherichella grounded out to end the contest.
