West Harrison, NY - The John Jay baseball team notched their second straight win as they defeated the Yeshiva Maccabees, 13-4, on Sunday morning.
With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 4-6 on the season while the Maccabees fall to 0-5.
The Bloodhounds have now won back-to-back games for the first time since 2022 when they defeated Valley Forge in a doubleheader, 4-1 and 11-0.
Quentin Bowman continues to power the Bloodhounds as he paced three hitters with a multi-hit day, finishing 4 for 5 at the dish with four runs scored and two RBIs. Hayden Tackett went 2 for 5 with a run scored and three RBIs. Axel Kappes III went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and drew two walks. Thomas Salerno also delivered two RBIs in his lone plate appearance on the day.
Kappes III (1-1) earned his first collegiate win on the mound, tossing five shutout innings in which he allowed just three hits, a walk and fanning a career-high eight batters. Michael Luongo, David Michalski, and Saujan Christie each threw scoreless innings in their relief outings, with Christie giving up a hit, a walk and striking out a career-high three in the ninth.
Coby Kamish led the way for the Maccabees with two hits in three trips while driving in three of the four runs for the home team. Noam Ouanounou, Jesse Rosenblum, and Adam Zahler each had a hit in the contest with Ouanounou driving in the other RBI for the Maccabees.
Zahler was pegged with the loss after allowing nine runs on 10 hits while walking six and striking out one in his seven innings of work.
The Bloodhounds got on the board first, scoring twice in their half of the first. A pair of walks to Bowman and Kappes III gave the visitors two runners on before both moved up after a successful double steal.
Spallin also drew a walk to load the bases. Mauro reached on a fielder's choice grounder back to Zahler, who throw to the catcher for the first out. The next batter, Tackett, ripped a double to right field, plating home both Kappes III and Spallin, giving John Jay a 2-0 lead.
The Bloodhounds added a run in the top of the second, making it a 3-0 advantage. Bowman sent a one-out double before moving to third on a wild pitch. Kappes III pelted a single to right field as Bowman crossed the plate for the third run of the game for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay continued their scoring prowess with another score in their half of the third. Tackett sent a one-out single to left before stealing. With two outs, Agosta sent a RBI single to right center, plating home Tackett as the visitors extended their lead to 4-0.
The Bloodhounds increased their lead to 5-0 following a second straight two-out hit, as Kappes III doubled down the right field line, plating Bowman. Kappes III continued to find his rhythm on the mound as he struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth.
John Jay plated across four more runs in the top of the six, extending their lead to 9-0. Isaac Salazar led of the frame with a single to left field and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With one out, Bowman clubbed his team-leading fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, as the Bloodhounds took a 7-0 lead. Mauro added an RBI groundout to second that scored Kappes III while Spallin came in on a balk, making it 9-0.
In the eighth, the Bloodhound sent eight batters to plate, scoring four runs to further distance themselves, staking a 13-0 advantage. Bowman kicked off the inning with a single to right field before Ethan Simaan pinch-hit and drew a walk. Both runners moved up before pinch-hitter Raheem Dolah was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Thomas Salerno.
Salerno smoked a single to left center field that brought in both Simaan and Bowman, making it 11-0. Two straight grounders to third off the bat of Tackett and Gangwish add two more runs for the visitors as they took a 13-0 lead.
Yeshiva got on the board in the bottom of the eighth, as Kamish delivered a bases-clearing three-run RBI double to center. The next batter, Ouanounou, sent a grounder second scored Kamish as the Maccabees trailed 13-4.
Christie came on to close it out for the Bloodhounds. He issued a walk to Daniel Ganopolsky before striking out Judah Troodler for the first out. Zahler doubled to center field that gave Yeshiva runners on second and third with just one out but Christie regrouped on the slab and struck out both Isaac Abboudi and Jesse Rosenblum to end the game.
John Jay will be back on the diamond on Sunday, March 17 for a non-conference doubleheader against Purchase College at Maimonides Park, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
First-pitch for the seven-inning twinbill is slated for noon.
