Baseball Falls In Non-Conference Tilt Against Maritime On Thursday Evening

Throggs Neck, NY - The John Jay baseball team rallied back from a 14-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning that saw the lead trimmed in half before the visiting Maritime Privateers scored seven runs over the final two innings as the Bloodhounds fell, 21-7, on Thursday evening at Reinhart Field. 
 
Anthony Agosta powered the Bloodhound offense with three hits and two RBIs, highlighted by his first home run of the season. John Spallin also had two RBIs for the "home" team. Michael Mauro collected two hits as well. 

Sean Jost (1-1) went 4.2 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits while walking four and striking out four batters. John Jay used a total of five relievers, with David Michalski tossing a scoreless seventh inning. 
 
Jaden Shea was one of four Privateers to homer in the contest while he, Freddy Forgione, and Alex Bardi had multi-round trippers. Shea finished the contest going 3 for 4 with three runs scored, three home runs, and five RBIs.Joe Sorge (1-0) went five innings, giving up one run on three hits while walking four and striking out eight batters for the win. 

Maritime scored four runs in the top of the first. Bardi walked and advanced to second on a passed ball as Forgione crossed the plate for the game's first run. With two outs, Shea stepped in and cleared the bases, connecting on the first of his three home runs as Maritime led 4-0. The Privateers added a run in the top of the third as Bardi and Matt Milone executed a double steal, as an errant throw by John Jay's Isaac Salazar brought in the fifth run for Maritime. 
 
The Bloodhounds got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Agosta ripped a two-out single to left field, bringing in Mauro, who reached on a single back up the middle. 

The Privateers staged a five-run top of the fifth, increasing their lead to 10-1 as Forgione connected on a solo home run to right. Bardi and Rob Copozzi went back-to-back, putting an end to Jost's night as Maritime went ahead, 8-1.  Michael Luongo came on in relief. The first batter he faced in Shea, he clubbed his second round-tripper of the evening, extending the lead to 9-1. A walk to Randy Ventura continued the frame as Harry Leipold doubled him in, as the visiting Privateers led 10-1. 

Maritime continued to find success with the long ball, as Forgione homered for the second time of the evening. Milone tripled to center field before Bardi clubbed his second home run of the night, as the lead swelled to 13-1. A two-out solo home run to right field by Shea, his second of the game, extended the lead to 14-1. 

In the bottom of the seventh, John Jay began to rally, nearly batting around as they scored five times on just two hits in the frame, trimming the Maritime lead to 14-6. Agosta led off with a single to left before Joseph Salerno walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Michalski drew a walk. The next batter, pinch-hitter Ryan Cherichella, was hit by a pitch, that scored Agosta. 

Ethan Simaan came on for Jaxen Gangwish and reached on an infield single by was caught in a rundown that allowed Salerno to score the third run of the contest. Spallin came up to the plate laced a double to right center field, clearing the bases as the Bloodhounds trailed 14-5. Spallin came into score on a balk that made it 14-6.

Maritime continued to add to its advantage, as Pinggera doubled off Sean Lynch scoring a pair as the Privateers went up, 16-6. In the bottom of the eighth, Agosta launched a solo home run to right field, as the Bloodhounds saw themselves down 16-7. 

The "visiting" Privateers produced five more runs in the top of the ninth, pushing the advantage to 21-7 as Justin Lee sent a double down the right-field line, scoring Blake Gnepper, as the Privateers claimed a 17-7 advantage. Chris Felder singled to short that brought in Lee, as the Privateers added one, leading 18-7. A two-run double from Pinggera elevated the lead to 20-7 before Patrick Bartoletta crossed the plate on a balk for the final run of the contest. 
 
John Jay concludes the weekend with a seven-inning doubleheader against Purchase on Sunday, March 17 at Maimonides Park, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
