Softball Opens 2024 Season With Split At Ramapo

Interim Head Coach Joe Burbridge gets first win at John Jay

Mahwah, NJ - The title defense officially commenced for the defending CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champions, the John Jay softball team. 
 
The Bloodhounds kicked off the season at Ramapo on Tuesday, splitting the doubleheader, winning game one, 6-5, before being shut out in the nightcap, 5-0, in five innings. 
 
Both teams start the year 1-1. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 6, Ramapo 5
Reigning CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year Jailene Santiago (1-0) toed the circle for her first start of the new campaign for the Bloodhounds. The Albany, NY native pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out four in picking up the win. 
 
At the plate, Santiago had a stellar afternoon, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and driving in four of the Bloodhounds six RBIs, which included her first home run of the season and the tenth of her John Jay career. 
 
Newcomer Alyssa Cadolino registered her first two career hits as a Bloodhound. Rylea Sandel went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and the go-ahead RBI in the top of the seventh. Angelina Schoelles also produced a hit and RBI in her three trips to the plate. 
 
Mahogany Wheeler powered the Roadrunner offense in game one, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored while driving in three RBIs. Alexis Corra and Clay'le Correa-Vanness each finished with two hits in the contes with Avery Bartolomeo and Avery Kontura each drove in an RBI with Kontura and Katie Rygiel getting a hit in their season debuts. 
 
Marissa DiPaolo allowed one run on five hits on 5.2 innings, in which she didn't factor into the decision as she ended her day with two walks and seven strikeouts. Brooke Knight relieved DiPaolo, giving up three runs on two hits while walking four and striking out two in an inning of work. Sara Cappetti (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit in a third of an inning worked. 

The Bloodhounds were held scoreless after one as Ramapo got on the board in their half of the inning. Wheeler stepped up and clubbed a 2-0 pitch from Santiago that cleared the left field wall, giving Ramapo the early lead. 

Ramapo added three more runs following a scoreless second inning to go up 4-0. Rygiel and Corra each had back-to-back hits before Wheeler brought them in on an RBI double to left center, making it 3-0 in favor of the hosts. Wheeler moved to third on a wild pitch before Bartolomeo lofted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Wheeler, extending the lead to 4-0. 

John Jay got on the board in the top of the fourth. Sandel ripped a first-pitch single down the right field line. Two batters later, Cadolino reached on a base hit to left, giving the Bloodhounds runners on first and second. The next batter, Schoelles, singled up the middle, bringing Sandel in for the first run of the contest for the Bloodhounds. 

Jordyn Prince led off the top of the sixth with a walk. Following a strikeout of reigning CUNYAC Player of the Year, Maleea Gallaspy, Sandel worked a walk, giving the Bloodhound two on. Santiago worked the count to 2-2 before cranking a three-run home run over the left field fence as the game was tied at 4-4 on her first of the season and tenth of John Jay career.  Facing two outs, Schoelles walked before Kelly Fajardo singled to center field. A grounder out by Sidney Bankston ended the threat as the game remained tied at 4-4. 

John Jay got the pivotal go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and an insurance run, which proved to be instrumental. Elika Rodrigues drew a walk to start the inning before being thrown out at second trying to steal. Prince drew her third walk of the day before Gallaspy doubled down the left field line, as Prince hustled to third. Sandel placed a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the third baseman as Prince scored the go-ahead run. Santiago added a RBI single down the left field line that scored Gallaspy as John Jay held a 6-4 advantage. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Santiago gave up an leadoff single to Corra before walking Wheeler. Bartolomeo flew out to fright that moved Corra to third and the next hitter, Kontura, lofted a deep fly to center that scored Corra, making it a one-run lead at 6-5 in favor of the Bloodhounds. The first pitch that Kori Gargiulo saw, she popped up to Bankston at third as she squeezed the ball into her glove, sealing the win for the Bloodhounds, the first for interim head coach, Joe Burbridge. 
Game 2 - John Jay 0, Ramapo 5 | 5 innings
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Bloodhounds managed just one hit in being shutout in five innings, 5-0. Ciaran Iglesias (0-1) made her first start for the Bloodhounds, going four innings, giving up five runs, two earned on eight hits while striking out at batter. Gallaspy produced the lone hit in the game for the visitors. 

Corra, Wheeler, Ysabellah Otero, and Liam Milsom each had two hits for the Roadrunners, with Corra driving in two RBIs. Wheeler, Otero and Milsom each finished with an RBI. Kassy Stefanski (1-0) pitched five scoreless frames in giving up just the lone hit to Gallaspy as she struck out eight batters and gave up one walk to preserve the shutout and the split. 

Ramapo got on the board in the bottom of the second. Otero sent a one-out double to center field before moving to third on a two-out wild pitch. Milsom reached on a bunt single back to the catcher as Otero scored on the throw down, making it 1-0 in favor of the Roadrunners. The game remained that way until the bottom of the fourth, when Ramapo sent eight batters to plate and scoring four times. Otero connected on a one-out solo round tripper to left that made it 2-0. 

Milsom reached on a bunt single to third before moving to third on a double-steal with Rygiel. Corra singled through the left side that scored both Rygiel and Milsom, making it 4-0. The next batter, Wheeler, singled to left field that brought in Corra for the fifth run of the contest. Stefanski got Fajardo to foul to first before striking out Bankston and Rodrigues to end the day. 

John Jay will remain on the road as they gear up to travel to Old Westbury, NY on Thursday, March 14 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Panthers.
