Old Westbury, NY - The John Jay softball team relinquished a one-run advantage in the later stages of Thursday's game one, falling to Old Westbury, 3-2. The Panthers earned a 5-2 decision in the second game of the twinbill.

John Jay falls to 1-3 on the season while Old Westbury remains undefeated at 4-0.

Game 1 - John Jay 2, Old Westbury 3
Sidney Bankston led the Bloodhound offense with two hits while Maleea Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, Jailene Santiago, and Kelly Fajardo all added a hit in the contest.

Santiago (1-1) made her second start of the season, giving up three runs on ten hits. However, the reigning CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year didn't walk a batter en route to posting 10 strikeouts, the eighth time in her Bloodhound career that she recorded double-digit punchouts despite taking the hard-luck loss.

Natalie Intrieri collected a game-high three hits while Madison Danin added two hits. She was credited with the lone RBI of the contest. Julia Pastrana (2-0) spun a complete game, six-hitter, giving up two unearned runs without yielding a walk and striking out three batters.

Both teams couldn't break through on the scoreboard until the top of the third. John Jay scored two runs in taking the early lead. With one out, Bankston doubled to right center. Jordyn Prince reached first on an error, which gave the visitors runners on the corners. The next batter, Gallaspy, tripled, scoring both Prince and Bankston to give John Jay the early lead. The visitors threatened for more as Sandel reached on fielder's choice but Gallaspy was called out at the plate.

Old Westbury cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Angelina Fernandez led off the stanza with a double to left center. Gianna DiLillo moved Fernandez over to the third before Amanda Varela, pinch-running for Fernandez, scored on a passed ball. The Panthers had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the fourth, sending six batters to the plate, but Santiago was able to strand the potential tying run at second.

Old Westbury did find the tying-score in the bottom of the fifth. Intrieri singled down the left-field line. With one out, Ashley Pierce singled, giving the home team a pair of runners. The next batter, Danin, singled down the right field line that plated Gianna Ventiere, knotting the game at 2-2.

The Bloodhounds had a chance to retake the lead in the sixth. Sandel sent a one-out single to left center before Santiago added a base hit that gave John Jay runners on first and second. The next batter, Alyssa Cadolino, grounded into the inning-ending double-play.

In the bottom of the inning, Santiago got pinch-hitter Morgan Albright swinging for her tenth strikeout of the day. DiLillo singled and moved into scoring position on a successful steal of second. Intrieri singled that moved DiLillo to third before she came home on the double steal.

The Bloodhounds had a chance in the seventh. Fajardo singled through the left side. With two outs, Bankston singled to left center that moved Schoelles to second. Prince lined out to first to end the contest.

Game 2 - John Jay 2, Old Westbury 5
The Bloodhounds narrowed the gap in half in the fourth before the Panthers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as John Jay dropped game two, 5-2.

Gallaspy, Santiago, Kayla Sauers, Cadolino, and Elika Rodrigues each had a hit with Santiago and Rodrigues driving in the RBIs for the visitors. Ciaran Iglesias (0-2) went the full six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) with three walks on ten hits in her second outing as a Bloodhound.

Taylor Murphy earned the start for the Panthers, going 3.1 innings in which, she allowed two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two before handing the pitching duties over to Layla Ramos (2-0), who earned the win. Ramos didn't allow a run while only giving up a hit while striking out two batters.

Alaina Reilly and Danin each had two hits with Pierce, Murphy, and Jenna Gaspa each driving in an RBI in the victory. The Panthers scored twice in their half of the first. Intrieri drew a walk before moving to second on a passed ball. With the bases loaded on a Reilly single, Pierce stepped in and connected on a run-scoring single through the left side, plating home Intrieri.

Two batters later, Murphy helped her cause with an RBI single up the middle, upping the Old Westbury lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the second, Reilly reached first on a fielding error by Fajardo in center that plated home DiLillo making it 3-0 in favor of the Panthers.

John Jay got on the board in the top of the third. Prince worked a leadoff walk before Gallaspy doubled to left field. With one-out, Santiago flew out to center as Prince tagged up and scored, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. Danin singled up the middle to commence the bottom of the third. Tylyn LeSane ran for Danin and scored on an error by the left field after Gaspa singled, making it 4-1. The Bloodhounds continued their comeback attempt, as Rodrigues singled through the left side, scoring Schoelles, who walked, as John Jay trailed 4-2 in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Old Westbury scored the final run of the contest as Juliana Vasquez lofted a pop fly that the infield fly-rule was immediately called with Danin alertly scoring on the play. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Sandel reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop before Santiago singled to left field. Sauers grounded out to end the game.
