Softball Earns Split At Saint Elizabeth on Monday Afternoon

Morristown, NJ - The John Jay softball team resumed their road trip to begin the 2024 campaign, as they split their non-conference tilt at Saint Elizabeth on Monday afternoon, falling 2-0 in game one before earning a 15-5 run-rule triumph in the nightcap. 
 
With Monday's results, the Bloodhounds move to 2-4 on the season while the Eagles falter to 4-5 overall.

The Bloodhounds and the Eagles were pitted in a pitcher's duel, as John Jay's Jailene Santiago (1-2) and Saint Elizabeth's Kami DeGaetani (3-1) didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth, and a run until the bottom of the sixth. 
 
Kelly Fajardo reached on an error by the Eagles' third baseman before Maleea Gallaspy reached on a fielder's choice, as Fajardo moved to second on an error by the second baseman. 
 
Santiago grounded out to third, which advanced Gallaspy to second and Fajardo to third, but Alyssa Cadolino grounded back to DeGaetani to end the threat. 
 
Saint Elizabeth had two out when Sydney Rawlings doubled to right field before Josilynn Garcia walked. Anna Popola singled to center field, scoring Rawlings, as the Eagles got on the board. 
 
The next batter, Katerra Lutes added a single to right field, scoring the pinch-runner Emily Fearon that made it 2-0 as DeGaetani retired Cadolino, Kayla Sauers and Angelina Schoelles to preserve the shutout. 
 
Fajardo and Elika Rodrigues got the only hits for the Bloodhounds. 
 
Savannah VanWinkle, Rawlings, Popola, Lutes, and Samantha Hemhauser each recorded a hit for Saint Elizabeth in the opener. 
 
Santiago went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five batters. Her counterpart DeGaetani earned the two-hit scoreless shutout as she struck out five Bloodhounds for her third victory of the season.

John Jay struck early and didn't let up, as they went up 9-1 after three, thanks to a five-run third, and tacked on five more in the top of the sixth as the Bloodhounds earned a 15-5 run-rule victory. 
 
Ciaran Iglesias (1-2) earned her first victory of the season, as she allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits while working the full six innings as she walked three and struck out three batters. 
 
Gabby Cummings (0-2) took the loss, surrendering ten runs (six earned) on nine hits while walking five and striking out four in five innings. Aimee Vega came on in the sixth, giving up five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one. 
 
Five Bloodhounds produced multi-hit performances in the second game of the twinbill, as Rylea Sandel and Iglesias collected three hits with Sandel driving in three RBIs and Iglesias bringing in a pair. 
 
Gallaspy went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBIs while Santiago finished the day with two hits in five trips, plating across four runners. Rodrigues and Iglesias joined Gallaspy with three runs scored. 
 
Julia Stewart and Gabby Fromm each had two hits with Fearon, VanWinkle, and Amelia Stevens driving in an RBI for the home team. 
 
Fajardo started the Bloodhounds first with a one-out walk before Gallaspy clubbed a two-run home run that cleared the left field wall, giving the visitors the early lead. 
 
Saint Elizabeth cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame, as VanWinkle lofted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Jadyn Barker, who led off the inning reaching on a fielding error. 
 
John Jay tacked on two more in the top of the second, taking a three-run lead, 4-1. Rodrigues drew a one-out walk before Iglesias singled to center giving the Bloodhounds runners on first and second. 
 
Prince laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt up the third baseline that moved the runners up. The next batter, Sandel, ripped a bases-clearing double to right centerfield. 
 
In the top of the third, the Bloodhounds sent up 11 batters in the inning, scoring five times as the lead swelled to 9-1. Gallaspy doubled to left center to start the big third inning. Santiago singled to left that brought home Gallaspy, making it 5-1. 
 
Brianna Cornejo, who pinch-ran for Santiago, came around to score on a wild pitch, upping the lead to 6-1. Rodrigues doubled to right field before coming home on an Iglesias double to left.
 
Sandel connected on an RBI single to center scoring Iglesias which gave the visitors a seven-run cushion at 8-1. Fajardo walked to load the bases before Gallaspy also earned the free pass that added one more to the Bloodhounds ledger. 
 
In the top of the fourth, Sauers reached on a single to right field. With two outs, Iglesias continued her torrid approach at the plate, sending a double to left center field that scored Sauers, making it 10-1. 
 
SEU got one back in the bottom of the frame as Fearon doubled to left field, scoring Fromm from second as the Eagles trailed 10-2. 
 
The home team put together a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Stewart led off with a single to right before Stevens reached on an infield single to first, giving the Eagles runners on the corners. 
 
Garcia sent a hard-hit grounder to third as Stewart scored on the play that made it 10-3 before Fromm brought in Stevens on an RBI single to right field, as SEU trailed 10-4. 
 
John Jay pushed across five more runs in the top of the sixth, taking a 15-4 lead. Rodrigues recorded another extra-base hit before Iglesias walked to give the Bloodhounds two runners on base with one out. 
 
Prince grounded out back to the pitcher that scored Rodrigues. A walk to Sandel brought in Julie-Ann Cartagena, who reached on an infield single to third. 
 
The next hitter, Gallaspy, reached on an error by the shortstop as Iglesias scored, and all the Bloodhounds moved up a base. The next batter, Santiago, promptly cleared the bases, doubling to left center as the Bloodhounds stretched their lead to 15-4. 
 
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth as Stevens grounded back to second, scoring Abigail Becker, as John Jay earned the split with a 15-5 victory. 
 
The Bloodhounds will head to Bronxville, NY to tangle with Sarah Lawrence on Thursday, March 21 with first-pitch slated for 2:00 p.m.
