Newark, NJ - The John Jay baseball team dropped its midweek game at Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday afternoon, falling by the score of 20-1.
With the setback, the Bloodhounds are now 5-9 while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-4.
Rutgers-Newark began the contest with a 4-0 lead after one as Matthew Storch doubled to left center which brought in a pair before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field from Daniel Fedorco that made it 3-0. An RBI single from Michael Weinbel made it 4-0 as Robert Gonzalez scored. The Scarlet Raiders tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second a wild pitch brought in the first run and an RBI single from Gonzalez plated the second run in the frame.
Following a scoreless third inning, Connor Baksh sent a single back up the middle that scored Storch as the Rutgers-Newark lead increased to 7-0. Three of the six hits in the bottom of the fifth helped the home team add six more scores to their total, as Weinbel delivered a ground-rule double that scored Fedorco while Dario Morales brought him in on a two-base hit to right-center, making it 9-0. Storch continued his hot-hitting approach at the plate, as he cleared the bases with a triple to right center, making it 12-0, before coming home on a sacrifice fly to center.
John Jay scored its only run of the contest in the sixth inning as with the bases loaded, Santo Anzalone was hit by a pitch.
Rutgers-Newark closed out the game, scoring seven runs over their final three innings in recording the victory.
Michael Mauro and Isaac Salazar got the lone hits for the Bloodhounds on the afternoon as Salazar broke up a string of eight straight John Jay hitters retired with a hard-hit single up the middle in the third inning. Sean Jost (1-2) allowed six runs on six hits while walking one and striking out a batter. David Michalski came on in relief, working 2.1 frames, giving up a run on three hits and posting a strikeout.
Strorch powered the Rutgers-Newark bats, going 5 for 6 with five runs scored and driving five RBIs. Weinbel and Morales had three hits each to go along with three RBIs while Baksh had a two RBIs. Baksh tossed five scoreless innings in picking up his third win of the season while only allowing a hit, two walks, and four strikeouts. Saul Carmenini tossed an inning, giving up the lone run while walking one. John Farrington and Bobby Portman tossed a combined three innings while not allowing a run and each recording a strikeout.
The Bloodhounds are next scheduled to take the field against Manhattanville on Saturday, March 23 for a doubleheader at Maimonides Park. John Jay had their game against Plattsburgh State, scheduled for March 21, canceled.
