Baseball Stages Seven-Run Fifth Inning In Game One To Hold Off Farmingdale, 7-6; Bloodhounds Split Doubleheader

Farmingdale, NY – The John Jay baseball team overcame a four-run setback to score seven runs in their half of the fifth inning to defeat the Farmingdale State College Rams, 7-6, in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
 
In the nightcap, both teams produced three hits apiece with the Rams getting a timely sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth as the Bloodhounds fell by a 1-0 count.
 
With today's results, the Bloodhounds move to 6-10 overall on the season while the Rams move to 6-6.
Game 1 | John Jay 7, Farmingdale State 6
The John Jay baseball team withstood a four-run deficit by Farmingdale State to rally for seven runs in their half of the fifth to hold on for a 7-6 victory in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. 
 
The Bloodhounds (6-9) got two hits from Quentin Bowman while he, Axel Kappes III, Santo Anzalone, Michael Mauro, Hayden Tackett, and Anthony Agosta each added a hit. 
 
Bowman, Kappes III, Anzalone, Tackett, and Ryan Cherichella each produced an RBI for the visitors. 
 
Sean Jost (2-2) went six innings in picking up his second win of the season. Jost allowed six runs on nine hits without striking out a batter and walking two. 
 
David Michalski earned the save, his first of the year, after working a scoreless seventh, as he inherited the bases-loaded jam. 
 
Bobby Pollock and Patrick Dallas had two hits for the Rams with Jordan Lambert driving in two of the six RBIs. 
 
Johnny Dougherty threw four scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out five but didn't factor into the decision. 
 
Christian Esperon (1-1) took the loss, facing five batters and giving up five runs on four hits. Tyler Kregeloh came on in relief, allowing two runs on two hits in his three innings, striking out three and walking one. 
 
The Rams scored first in their half of the second. Heyder reached on an infield single to first before moving into scoring position on the sacrifice bunt by Lambert. 
 
The next batter, Pimentel, sent a single to left that plated Heyder for the first run of the ballgame. 
 
Farmingdale State tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third in building a 4-0 advantage. 
 
Heyder continued to be a catalyst for the home team, drawing a bases-loaded walk that made it 2-0. Lambert cleared the bases on a two-run single to left field, making it 4-0. 
 
Following a scoreless fourth inning from both teams, John Jay staged a big comeback, sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring seven runs on six hits in taking a 7-4 lead. 
 
Anzalone singled to left to start the inning. Mauro singled through the right side before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. 
 
A second wild pitch from Esperon plated the first run for the Bloodhounds. 
 
Gangwish drew a walk. The next batter, Tackett, singled to right, bringing in Mauro, cutting the deficit in half, 4-2. 
 
Agosta added a base hit to left that loaded the bases for the Bloodhounds and put an end to Esperon's afternoon. 
 
The new pitcher, Kregeloh, issued a walk to Cherichella, as John Jay continued to climb back, trialing 4-3. 
 
Bowman knotted the game at 4-4 on an RBI single to left field. The visitors took their first lead of the contest as Kappes III singled to right field making it 5-4. 
 
Another wild pitch from the Rams' arms brought in John Jay's sixth run of the contest. With two outs, Anzalone came back up again in the frame, sending a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Bowman, as John Jay led 7-4. 
 
Jost kept the Bloodhounds lead at hand despite giving up back-to-back singles from Deutsch and Dallas before sending DiMartino up as a pinch-hitter.
 
It would be the final batter Jost faced as he hit him with an errant pitch that loaded the bases. 
 
Michalski came on for Jost. Michalski got Wasserman to ground out to second for the first out as Deutsch scored to make it a two-run lead. 
 
DiRocco sent a hard-hit grounder to third as Dallas came into score, making a one-run advantage for John Jay. 
 
Michalski induced his third grounder as Pollock sent one to second ending the first game and giving the Bloodhounds the win. 
Game 2 | John Jay 0, Farmingdale State 1
Runs were at a premium in a pitchers' duel between Axel Kappes III and Derek Watts. 
 
Kappes III (1-2) allowed just the one run on three hits while walking three and striking out a batter.  Agosta, Mauro, and Cherichella each had a hit in the contest. 
 
DiRocco, Pollock, and Heyder connected on a hit with Pollock driving in the lone RBI on a foul out to right field in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
John Jay had a chance in the second inning. John Spallin worked a one-out walk and promptly stole second. Two batters later, Isaac Salazar was issued a free base, giving the visitors two runners on but Cherichella flew out to end the inning. 
 
The Bloodhounds will be back on the diamond on Wednesday, March 27, as they will host the St. Joseph's University - Long Island Golden Eagles at Houlihan Park in The Bronx on the campus of Fordham University. 
 
First-pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
