Baseball Commences The Week With 10-4 Road Victory At St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn

Staten Island, NY - Both the John Jay Bloodhounds and the St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn Bears exchanged zeroes over the first four innings before the visitors scored three in the top of the fifth and staged a five-run insurance top of the eighth in posting a 10-4 win on Tuesday afternoon.

Michael Mauro (2-4) earned his second win of the season, tossing 88 pitches over 6.2 innings in which he allowed two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out three batters. David Michalski preserved the victory, tossing the final 2.1 innings, striking out two despite giving up two unearned runs.

Six of the nine Bloodhound batters recorded a hit, all of them producing multi-hits, led by three hits apiece from Axel Kappes III, Santo Anzalone and Jaxen Gangwish

Quentin Bowman went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and drove in a team-high four RBIs. John Spallin went 2 for 5 with a run scored and three RBIs.

Sean Schneeberg powered the Bears offense with three hits while driving in two RBIs. Brian Sanchez matched Schneeberg with the two RBIs. Dylan Cantwell took the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out a batter.

Mauro escaped a potential big bottom of the first, as he allowed three straight hits to start the contest before settling in and retiring the next three, which included back-to-back strikeouts of George Demacopoulos and Nick Tapio.

The John Jay right-hander retired nine straight batters before a one-out single by Demacopoulos broke up that stretch. A walk to Tapio gave the Bears a pair of runners on in their half of the fourth, but Mauro struck out Anthony Faggiano and fielder's choice to second concluded the frame.

Cantwell needed four pitches to retire the first two Bloodhound batters before Isaac Salazar singled through the left side. Bowman followed with an infield single to third.

Kappes III doubled in the first run of the game as Salazar scored, giving John Jay the 1-0 advantage. The next batter, Spallin, ripped a single back up the middle that plated two as the Bloodhounds added to their total while knocking Cantwell from the contest.

Mauro continued to find his stride on the bump and worked around potential trouble in the bottom of the sixth. A lead-off walk to Chris Stegmuller started the SJBK sixth. Tapio singled to shortstop, giving the home team two runners on with one out.

A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position but Mauro stranded both of them, getting Faggiano to pop out to third and Matthew Quinones to ground out to short, ending the threat.

St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn trimmed the deficit to one, 3-2, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Mauro needed just two pitches to handle the leadoff and two-hole hitter. Camerada singled up the middle before moving to second on the steal.

A 1-0 pitch to Schneeber was sent out of the ballpark, making it a one-run score and putting an end to Mauro's afternoon at the mound. Michalski came on and gave up a double to Stegmuller but got Chris Arcati, who pinch-hit for Demacopoulous to strike out, ending the stanza.

Anzalone led off with a single up the middle before a Mauro base-knock moved Anzalone to third. The next batter, Gangwish, sent one back up the middle, scoring Anzalone, giving the Bloodhounds a 4-2 edge.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Bowman connected on his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a grand-slam to right, making it 8-2.

The Bears continued to fight back, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning, cutting the John Jay lead in half, 8-4.

In the ninth, Spallin led off with a first-pitch solo home run to center that made it 9-4. Few batters later, Hayden Tackett singled to left center that plated Mauro, pushing the lead to 10-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, Schneeberg ripped a single up the middle. Joe Provvisiero came on to replace Schneeberg at first. With one out, Michael Gardener singled the left side, while moving to second on the throw. However, Provvissiero was out at third on a strong throw from the Bloodhounds leftfielder.

Michalski struck out Tapio, ending the ballgame, as John Jay earned their seventh victory of the season.

The Bloodhounds will be back on Wednesday afternoon as they will host the St. Joseph's University - Long Island Golden Eagles at Houlihan Park on the campus of Fordham University.

First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
