Softball Extends Win Streak To Seven Straight With Shutout Victories Over Saint Joseph

Bronx, NY - The John Jay softball team posted a pair of shutout triumphs on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Saint Joseph, 8-0 in six innings in game one and 4-0 in game two.

With the wins, the Bloodhounds move to 8-4 overall on the season while the Blue Jays falter to 5-10.

Game 1 | John Jay 8, University of Saint Joseph 0 (6 innings)
The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings before scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth and adding two more in the bottom of the sixth for the 8-0 run-rule win in six innings.

Jailene Santiago (3-2) went the full six innings, allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out seven batters for her 26th career victory as a Bloodhound and fourth of the season.  Additionally, today's win marked her 16th career complete game and fourth this year.

Maleea Gallaspy went 3 for 3 with three runs scored while Elika Rodrigues collected two hits in four trips and matched Gallaspy with three runs scored. Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, and Santiago each drove in two RBIs in the victory for the Bloodhounds.

Alyssa Roberts (1-4) took the loss for the visitors after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits while walking five and striking out two batters. Tessa D'Aquila came on in relief of Roberts and allowed two runs on two hits in her one inning. Alexis Volinsky and Madelyn Ellis notched the lone hits for the Blue Jays in the opening contest.

Rodrigues kicked off the contest with an infield single and moved into scoring position with a steal of second. Gallaspy singled up the middle that gave the home team two runners before Sandel sent a perfectly places sacrifice bunt up the first baseline that scored Rodrigues. Santiago moved Gallaspy to third on a fly out to center before Bankston reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that allowed Gallaspy to score the second run of the contest.

In the bottom of the second, the Bloodhounds plated three more runs in taking a 5-0 lead. Kelly Fajardo led off with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch. Kayla Sauers drew a six-pitch walk that gave John Jay runners on first and second. With one out, Gallaspy laced a hard-hit double to left field that scored both Sauers and Fajardo making it 4-0. A sacrifice fly from Sandel brought in Rodrigues for her second RBI of the day, increasing the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gallaspy scored on a wild pitch after connecting on a 0-1 double to left center field. The Bloodhounds capped off their fast start as Rodrigues led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield single to short and recorded her second steal of the day. Gallaspy drew a walk and both executed a double steal before Sandel walked on four straight pitches.

Santiago, with the bases loaded and no outs, took the 2-1 pitch to center field as Gallaspy and Rodrigues came home sealing the victory, 8-0.

Game 2 | John Jay 4, University of Saint Joseph
A three-run first inning with an insurance score in the bottom of the fourth proved to be all that the Bloodhounds needed in the second game of the doubleheader, shutting out the Blue Jays, 4-0.

Lindsay Ogden (3-0) won her third straight outing, going the full seven innings allowing just seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Rodrigues continued her hot hitting, going 2 for 3 while teammate Angelina Schoelles also recorded a multi-hit game with two hits and two of the four RBIs. Rodrigues and Santiago chipped in the other RBIs for the Bloodhounds.

Kaitlyn Ouellette (1-2) tossed six innings, giving up all four runs on the nine hits while walking one and striking out four. Jenn Antonowicz led the way with two hits for the University of Saint Joseph. Roberts, Jenna Zup, Sydney Robison, Izzy Milardo, and Emily Beyer had a hit for the visitors.

Avianna Ibrahim was hit by a pitch to commence the second game of the twinbill. The next batter, Antonowicz, popped up a bunt attempt that found the glove of Gallaspy, who alertly threw out Ibrahim at first to complete the double-play.

The Bloodhounds collected three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first, taking the early lead. Gallaspy sent a one-out double to centerfield. With two outs, Santiago singled up the middle that brought home Gallaspy for the 1-0 lead. Bankston singled to left, moving Santiago to second before Schoelles delivered a bases-clearing double to right-center as John Jay went ahead 3-0.

The Bloodhounds' defense was on display in the second inning. A one-out double from Milardo gave the Blue Jays runners on second and third. Ouellette reached on a fielder's choice as she sent a grounder to Sandel at short, who alertly fired a strike to Gallaspy, who applied the tag on Robison for the second out. A walk to Beyer loaded the bases for the visitors but Ogden regained her composure inside the circle and struck out Ibrahim swinging on four pitches.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth as the Bloodhounds added an insurance run. Jordyn Prince doubled to left field before coming around to score on the RBI single from Rodrigues, who moved to second on the throw home as John Jay led 4-0.

Ogden retired six straight until issuing a walk to Ibrahim that snapped that streak. She struck out Antonowicz before Roberts flew out to left and Prince was able to double-off Ibrahim at first for the final out.

John Jay will look to continue their winning ways on Monday, April 1 as they are scheduled to host Yeshiva at Bahoshy Softball Complex.

First-pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
