Baseball's Offensive Output Compiled With Mauro's Complete Game Lifts Bloodhounds To Victory Over Mitchell On Wednesday Afternoon

Bronx, NY - A four-run second inning by the John Jay baseball team mixed with a pair of two-run frames and ultimately capped by an impressive pitching performance from Michael Mauro propelled the Bloodhounds past Mitchell College, as John Jay defeated the Mariners, 9-2, at Houlihan Park on the campus of Fordham University on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 10-13 while Mitchell falls to 17-8. The triumph today by John Jay marks the first time since 2019 that the team has recorded double-digit wins.

Jaxen Gangwish, John Spallin, and Hayden Tackett each collected two hits in the contest with Spallin driving in a team-high three RBIs. Gangwish and Anthony Agosta each added two RBIs.

Mauro recorded his third win of the season, spinning his first career complete game as he allowed just two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four batters in throwing 121 pitches.

Michael Gajda and Jack Hayes each produced two hits for the visiting Mariners with Owen Robbins driving in both of the team's runs on the afternoon.

Thai-ler Sestokas (1-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work. Nicholas Stornjy came on in relief, throwing 5.2 frames, allowing five runs on six hits while walking one and fanning six batters. Mason Rodriguez worked a scoreless inning.

A scoreless first inning by both teams lent itself to a potential big inning by the visitors and later by the Bloodhounds.

Robbins swung over the top of a ball in the dirt for strike three but reached first on as a result of the ball getting past Joseph Salerno behind the plate.

With one out, Gajda reached on an infield single to short before Savier Paige was hit by a pitch to load the bases but Vartanian popped up to second to end the threat.

Santo Anzalone ignited the frame with a leadoff single back up the middle on a 0-1 pitch. Mauro, who needed just four hits to reach 100 for his career, singled to left field to give the Bloodhounds the first two runners on.

A walk to Spallin loaded the bases for Tackett, who delivered a hard-hit single to left field that plated home Anzalone for the first run of the game.

Salerno drew a five-pitch walk that scored Mauro as the Bloodhounds led 2-0. Gangwish stepped in and ripped a deep drive to center field, plating both Tackett and Spallin to increase the lead and put an end to Sestokas' afternoon on the mound.

The Mariners struck back in the top of the third, cutting the deficit in half, 4-2, as Robbins connected on a two-run home run to left center field.

In the bottom of the fourth, it was the Bloodhounds' turn. Tackett led off the stanza with a single to left field before coming around to score on a two-run laser to left field off the bat of Agosta, as John Jay led 6-2 on the Bloodhounds' second baseman's second home run of the season.

In the next inning, John Jay continued their home run prowess. A one-out walk to Anzalone started the inning. Following a pop-out to first by Mauro, Spallin connected on the first pitch he saw, clubbing it to left centerfield for his third of the season as the Bloodhounds extended their lead to 8-2.

The Bloodhounds added a run in the bottom of the seventh. Axel Kappes III and Quentin Bowman each singled to left field before Anzalone lined out to left for the first out.

Mauro reached on a fielder's choice that forced out Bowman but kept runners on the corners for the Bloodhounds.

Spallin continued his hot approach at the plate, sending a run-scoring single to right field that scored Kappes III giving John Jay a 9-2 lead.

In the ninth, Hayes connected on a ground-rule double to left. A walk to Tyler Powell gave the visitors two runners on but two straight grounders to third sealed the victory for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay resumes CUNYAC play on Saturday, April 13 as they will travel to the Bronx, NY to face Lehman College.

First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
