Baseball Sweeps Lehman In Monday's Doubleheader; Mauro Eclipses 100 Career Hit Mark

Bronx, NY -  For the first time since the 2007 season, the John Jay baseball team moved to 4-0 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, as the Bloodhounds took both games of Monday's doubleheader, defeating the Lehman College Lightning, 26-7 in game one and 25-7 in game two. 
 
John Jay moves to 12-13 overall on the season and extends their win streak to three while the Lightning fall to 0-16 and 0-6 in conference action. 
 
Veteran Bloodhound Michael Mauro reached a career milestone, as the Yorktown Heights, NY native and team captain recorded his 100th career hit in Monday's twinbill. 
 

 
 
Game 1 | John Jay 26, Lehman 7
The Bloodhounds held a 4-2 advantage after two innings before John Jay ignited a thunderous 13-run top of the fourth in building a 24-3 lead. A run in the top of the fifth made it 25-3 before Lehman scored thrice as the visitors won by a 26-7 count in game one of Monday's doubleheader. 
 
Santo Anzalone had a perfect day at the dish, going 4 for 4 with two runs scored and drove in two RBIs. Jaxen Gangwish and Anthony Agosta each had three hits with Agosta and Axel Kappes III driving in five RBIs apiece. Kappes III, Quentin Bowman, Ethan Simaan, and Agosta each delivered a home run in the first game. 
 
Elias Fermin paced Lehman going 3 for 3, driving in four RBIs while Cristopher Cruz added two hits. Manuel Corniel and Lizardo Antigua were credited with an RBI each. 
 
Sean Jost (3-2) earned his third win of the season, surrendering three runs on four hits while striking out two batters and not yielding a walk. The relief core Michael Luongo and Saujan Christie struck out five batters with Luongo fanning four in his two innings of work. 
 
Gangwish led off with a single to left before moving to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Anzalone sent a single to left center that brought in the first run of the contest. In the bottom of the frame, Lehman tied the score on a solo home run off the bat of Fermin. John Jay sent seven batters to the plate and scored three times in taking a 4-1 lead. John Spallin led off the inning on a hit-by-pitch. Agosta sent a one-out single through the left side that gave the visitors runners on the corner. 
 
The next batter, Ryan Cherichella, doubled to center field, scoring both runners that gave John Jay a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Kappes reached on a fielding error by the second baseman as Cherichella scored to make it 4-1. 
 
The Lightning cut the deficit in half, 4-2, on an RBI single through the left side from Brandon Deynes
 
John Jay erupted for seven runs in the top of the third, upping their lead to 11-2. Anzalone started the inning with a double to right center. Mauro then singled to right for his 97th career hit. Newly-minted CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Tackett, singled and advanced to second on fielding error by the right fielder as Anzalone scored making it 5-2. Agosta cleared the bases with a two-run double to left center that moved the lead to 7-2. Gangwish mirrored Agosta's at-bat with an opposite-field, two-run double that scored Agosta, moving John Jay ahead, 8-2. Bowman laced a double to center, bringing in both Kappes III and Gangwish which made it 10-2 before Anzalone came back up with a double to right center, scoring Bowman, that increased the lead to 11-2. 
 
Fermin lofted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Cruz, who started the inning with a triple to left center. 

The Bloodhounds sent 16 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning, scoring 13 times on seven hits and capitalizing on five Lehman errors, as John Jay broke the game open, leading 24-3. John Jay got three home runs in the frame, as Bowman clubbed a two-run homer to center, Agosta connected on a three-run round tripper to left while Kappes III walloped a three-run shot to right field. 

In the top of the fifth, Tackett added an RBI single extending the visitors' lead to 25-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Lehman got three runs back, as Antigua belted a solo home run to right center before Fermin cleared the bases with a two-run home run to center making it 25-6 in favor of John Jay. 

The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when Simaan homered to left center field to make it a 26-6 advantage. Corniel, in the bottom of the seventh, singled to short that brought in Antigua after he delivered a one-out double to center field for the final run of the contest. 
 
Game 2 | John Jay 25, Lehman 7
In the nightcap of Monday's doubleheader, the Bloodhounds jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the heels of two home runs in the frame. Lehman scored a run in the first and second and rallied with a four-run bottom of the third to jut John Jay's lead to 9-6, but the Bloodhounds embarked on a nine-run fourth inning that ultimately led to a 25-7 win in game two. 
 
Five John Jay hitters had multi-hit games, led by Gangwish, who finished with four hits, four runs and drove in three. Cherichella had a career afternoon, going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and leading the offense with five RBIs. 
 
Mauro reached the 100 career hit milestone in game two, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Thomas Salerno and Agosta each had two hits with Bowman, Anzalone, Joseph Salerno, Agosta, and Tyler DeStefano all adding two RBIs in the victory. 
 
Kappes III took the mound but didn't factor into the decision after going three innings, giving up six runs on six hits. David Michalski (3-1) earned his third win of the season, giving up one run on two hits over four innings and striking out a career-high eight batters. 
 
Cruz and Erik Then each had two hits to pace the Lightning with Then driving in a team-high three RBIs. Cruz, Frederick de la Roas, Fermin, and Corniel all added an RBI for Lehman. 
 
Gangwish led off with a single to left field and scored on Cherichella's two-run shot to right center. A walk to Bowman moved the line to Anzalone, who connected on a two-run home run that made it 4-0. With two-outs, Agosta doubled down the left field line, scoring Mauro and giving John Jay a five-run cushion. A walk to Isaac Salazar gave the visitors runners on the corner. As John Jay batted around, Gangwish stepped in for his second at-bat of the frame, singling to left center that brought in Agosta, making it 6-0. Cherichella doubled, clearing the bases and upping the advantage to 8-0. 

Fermin put Lehman on the board in the bottom of the first with sacrifice fly to centerfield. Lehman continued to chip away as Corniel singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the second as the Lightning trailed by six, 8-2. 

Tackett started the John Jay third with a walk and moved into scoring position on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Salazar reached on a fielder's choice as Tackett was thrown out at home for the second out. Gangwish continued his torrid stretch at the plate, connecting on his third double to right field, moving Salazar to third. A walk to Cherichella loaded the bases, but a wild pitch brought in Salazar to make it 9-2. 

Lehman staged three home runs in the bottom of the third as Cruz and de la Rosa went back-to-back and two batters later, Then connected on a two-run homer to left center, as the Lightning got to within three, 9-6. 

John Jay produced a nine-run top of the fourth in taking an 18-6 advantage. One of the bigger hits in the frame came off the bat of Mauro, who clubbed a three-run home run to left field. In the top of the fifth, the Bloodhounds plated across two more runs as Gangwish reached on a fielder's choice that scored Thomas Salerno and Cherichella added an RBI single that scored Gangwish. 

Then doubled to right field that scored Kevin Arias as Lehman trailed 20-7 in the bottom of the fifth. 

In the top of the seventh, Thomas Salerno doubled down the right field line and moved to third. DeStefano recorded his first home run of the season, sending a deep drive over the right field fence as John Jay led 22-7. Alvy Grullon pinch-hit for Bowman and delivered his first collegiate hit and RBI, scoring Vincent Gangone that brought the lead to 23-7. Simaan doubled to right field before Joseph Salerno brought Grullon and Simaan in to score on his RBI-double, as John Jay led 25-7. 

Michalski recorded his seventh and eighth strikeouts of the night before getting Antigua to ground out to first to end the contest as John Jay remained undefeated in CUNYAC play. 

John Jay will travel to Newburgh, NY on Thursday, April 18, as they will take on Mount Saint May College. First-pitch against the Knights is set for 4:00 p.m.
