Men’s Volleyball Season Ends in CUNYAC Championship Tournament Semifinals

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team reached the CUNYAC Championship Tournament semifinals for the third consecutive season, facing a third meeting this campaign with the two-seed Hunter Hawks.

Despite a competitive affair, the three-seed Bloodhounds ended their run with three-set match against the Hawks.

Set One: Hunter 25 - John Jay 18

WIth a spot in the CUNYAC Championship on the line, the visiting Bloodhounds came out in strong form. Alex Bridgelall and Logan Ramos each served up a service ace in the opening points and Jeferson Avila-Macancela's first kill of the set gave his side a 6-2 lead.

The Bloodhounds led for the first 21 points of the set, but the Hawks took advantage of a pair of errors by the visitors to kick off a run of six of seven points to take a 12-11 advantage. Ramos and Steven Ajazi scored a swing each to put John Jay back in front, but the three seed was undone by the Hawks attack. Hunter recorded 13 kills on a .346 hitting percentage, scoring six of the next seven points and cementing a seven-point advantage by the end of the match.

Kyle Barriffe-Johnson led the Bloodhound attack with three blocks.

Set Two: Hunter 25 - John Jay 22

After letting the first set slip away, the Bloodhounds played their most dialed in set of the match in the second - hitting .419 with 15 kills. Barriffe-Johnson and Bridgelall pushed John Jay to a 4-1 lead to start on a kill, then ace, respectively. Back-to-back service errors allowed Hunter to pull within one and three kills in four tries for the Hawks' Kyle Foley gave Hunter a 9-8 lead.

The Bloodhounds would later prey on a pair of Hunter service errors and Stephen Daly would hit his team back into a tie game with one of his five kills. The swing evened the set at 15-all. John Jay later tied the match again at 17-17, but the Hunter offense proved too strong with five kills by Jimmy Chang and Jon Pfleuger down the stretch to push the lead to 23-19. Ramos and Day were busy at the net in the closing points to cut the lead to two for Hunter, but Chang secured the set win with his fifth kill of the set.

Set Three: Hunter 25 - John Jay 19

John Jay took the floor against a brand new lineup for Hunter and took advantage of an error-laden set to take an early 6-4 lead. Four straight points by the Hawks forced a Bloodhound timeout down 9-12. The Bloodhounds kept pace with Hunter through the middle portion of the set but ultimately as the Hawks' regular features fueled the offense on a 4-0 run to put the hosts up 22-17 and scoring three of the next five points for the win.

Barriffe-Johnson was the offensive standout for the Bloodhounds in the season finale, finishing with 14 kills and one solo block. Bridgelall led his team with 28 assists and two aces, adding six digs.
