Softball's Season High 13-Game Win Streak Snapped In Game One; Earn Split With 7-3 Triumph In Game Two

Jersey City, NJ - The John Jay softball team saw their season-high 13-game win streak came to a halt on Thursday, falling to the New Jersey City Gothic Knights, 8-1 in game one and rebounding to post a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. 
 
With the results, John Jay moves to 15-5 overall while New Jersey City moves to 7-14.

The John Jay softball team took an early 1-0 lead but the New Jersey City Gothic Knights sparked a six-run bottom of the third to take their first lead and later added two more runs as the Bloodhounds saw their 13-game win streak come to a close, falling 8-1 in game one. 
 
The Bloodhounds were held to just five hits, as Elika Rodrigues, Rylea Sandel, Kelly Fajardo, Ciaran Iglesias, and Alyssa Cadolino all recorded a base knock. Sandel drove in the lone RBI for the visitors. 
 
Lindsay Ogden (6-1) lost for the first time this season, allowing all six runs on eight hits, striking out two batters and walking two batters. 
 
The Gothic Knights recorded eight hits as seven of the first eight batters all registered a hit. Abby Castro and Hailey Mojica drove in two RBIs each while pitcher Emily Tunney helped her own cause with an RBI. Alonah Olden and Jordan Mendolla also provided an RBI.
 
Tunney (1-1) notched the complete game win, allowing two walks and striking out six batters. 
 
John Jay got on the board in the opening frame. Rodrigues walked and moved to second on a grounder by Sidney BankstonThe next batter, Sandel, ripped a double to right field as Rodrigues raced around the bag and scored. 
 
The score remained that way until the bottom of the third when NJCU erupted for six runs. Mya Villaneuva led off with a single to right field. Natalie Rosales reached on a fielder's choice to short and promptly moved to second on the stolen base. 

Tunney doubled her home for the first run by NJCU, tying the game at 1-1. A walk to Olden and a steal by Tunney gave the Gothic Knights runners on the corners before Olden swiped second. Mendolla reached on a bunt single to first that plated Tunney, giving the home team the lead, 2-1.Castro cleared the bases with a double to right center making it 4-1 and Mojica closed the inning with a double but was thrown out by a laser of a throw from Fajardo as NJCU led 6-1. 

NJCU plated across two more runs in their half of the fourth. Rosales reached on throwing error, scoring Marietta Angulo, who pitched ran for Mya Villanueva. Olden reached first safely on a bunt single back to the pitcher as Rosales scored from third, extending the lead to 8-1. 
 
The Bloodhounds had a chance in the top of the sixth. Fajardo singled to left center before Iglesias was hit by a pitch but back-to-back flyouts from Cadolino and Jordyn Prince ended the threat.

In game two, the Bloodhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead before NJCU trimmed the deficit to one in their half of the fourth. 
 
John Jay scored a run in the sixth and tacked on two more in the top of the seventh, propelling them to a split of the doubleheader, winning 7-3. 
 
Santiago (7-2) earned her seventh win of the season and 29th of her Bloodhound career as he went the full seven for her 20th career complete game. The Albany, NY native allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out four. 

Bankston and Iglesias each had two hits and an RBI for the Bloodhounds. Sandel, Santiago, Angelina Schoelles, Fajardo, Cadolino, and Prince also added a hit. Schoelles, Iglesias, Cadolino, and Prince had an RBI as well. 
 
Emma Grochowski drove in all three NJCU runs while she and Tunney recorded two hits. Mya Villanueva and Rosales had a hit off of Santiago. 
 
Sidnie Dabbadie (4-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) in four innings while striking out six batters and not walking a batter. Sam Miller came on in relief, allowing three unearned runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. 
 
Both teams traded zeros until the top of the third. Cadolino was hit to start the frame before Prince lined into a double play. Rodrigues reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop and moved to second on a steal. Bankston singled to left center scoring Rodrigues for the 1-0 advantage. 
 
In the top of the fourth, Fajardo started things with a two-out single to right. Iglesias matched her with a base knock to centerfield.  The next batter, Cadolino, doubled to left center as Fajardo scored making it 2-0. Prince reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop and moved to second. Cadolino came around to score as the center fielder misplayed the ball as well, with Iglesias following her, making it 4-0. 

The Gothic Knights got to within one in the bottom of the frame. Grrochowski doubled to left center and moved to third on the throw as she cleared the bases. 

In the John Jay half of the sixth, Fajardo reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs, Prince found room up the middle, bringing in Fajardo for the fifth run. 
 
In the seventh, Sandel reached base on a one-out single up the middle. Santiago walked, giving John Jay a pair of runners. Schoelles singled to right field and brought in Sandel as the right fielder overthrew her teammate as John Jay led 6-3. With two outs, Iglesias continued her timely hitting, singling to left field that brought in Brianna Cornejo, who pinch-ran for Santiago. 
 
Santiago had retired the last four batters until Grochowski doubled to start the bottom of the seventh. She rebounded inside the circle, getting Fulton to foul out to Cadolino at first before Tunney sent a grounder back to her in the circle for the second out. Santiago induced the 40th ground out of the season for her, as Mojica sent on to Schoelles as the Bloodhounds managed the split. 
 
John Jay resumes CUNYAC play on Saturday, April 13, as they will take on the Brooklyn College Bulldogs at Cougar Softball Field on the campus of Kean University. 
 
The first pitch is set for noon.
