Softball Remains Undefeated In CUNYAC Play With Saturday Sweep Of Brooklyn; Schoelles Notches 100th Career Hit

Union, NJ - The John Jay softball team remained undefeated in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, as the defending league champions swept the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, 4-0 and 9-1 in five innings. 
 
With the wins, John Jay moves to 17-5 overall on the season and 4-0 in league play. Brooklyn falls to 5-11 and 0-4 in conference action. 
 

 
Game 1 - John Jay 4, Brooklyn 0
Jailene Santiago powered the Bloodhounds inside the circle and at the plate as John Jay pitched a shutout over the Bulldogs, 4-0. 
 
Santiago went 3 for 3 in the contest, driving in three RBIs and connecting on her 11th home run of the season. 
 
For the Albany, NY native, she connected on her 20th home run of her John Jay career and drove in her 103rd career RBI. 
 
Maleea Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, Angelina Schoelles, and Jordyn Prince each added a hit with Prince delivering in the fourth RBI. 
 
Santiago (8-2) garnered her eighth win of the season and in the process, logged her 21st complete game and 31 career win (30th as a Bloodhounds) as she struck out 12 batters while walking three and issuing three hits in the 128-pitch outing. 
 
Paige Palacios, Dasha Goodman, and Nadeen Khalil all got a hit with Goodman producing the lone extra-base hit for the visitors. 
 
Palacios worked a seven-pitch leadoff walk but Santiago rallied back to strikeout the side. 
 
In the bottom of the inning, Gallaspy sent a one-out double to right center field. Sandel followed with a single to left before moving to second ont the thow. 
 
Santiago worked the count to 3-1 before unleashing a towering blast over the left field wall as the Bloodhounds jumped out to the 3-0 lead. 
 
Santiago had struck out the next seven batters before Khalil lopped a single to left field in the Bulldogs' third. 
 
The visitors threatened as Palacios reached on an infield single to third base, which gave them runners on first and second. Santiago struck out Jelisa Palenque and got Melanie Millan fouled out to Sidney Bankston in right for the final out. 
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the home team tacked on one more run. Schoelles doubled to right center to start the inning and marked her 99th career hit. 
 
Following a sacrifice bunt from Kelly Fajardo, Prince singled to left center, scoring Schoelles making it 4-0. 
 
Santiago struck out Trousdale and Khalil for the final two outs in preserving the shutout victory for the Bloodhounds. 
 
Game 2 - John Jay 9, Brooklyn 1 (5 innings) 
Brooklyn struck first but the Bloodhounds responded with three in the first, a run in the second and five between the fourth and fifth innings to post a 9-1 run-rule victory for the sweep. 
 
The Bloodhounds' top-three hitters, Elika Rodrigues, Gallaspy, and Sandel went a combined 9 for 10 as each recorded three hits while Rodrigues scored four times. 
 
Ciaran Iglesias had two hits and an RBI while Schoelles went 1 for 1 with two walks and reached the 100-career hit milestone. 
 

 
Lindsay Ogden (7-1) was credited with the win after allowing just one run, on two hits with a walk and six strikeouts. 
 
Goodman and Vida Rodriguez got the lone hits for the Bulldogs with Goodman being credited with the lone RBI for Brooklyn. 
 
Brooklyn got on the board first in their half of the first inning. Palacios drew a four-pitch walk before moving to second on the stolen base. 
 
Ogden struck out Palenque and Millan as Palacios slid into third. Goodman reached on an infield single that ricocheted off the glove of Gallaspy at first, scoring Palacios. 
 
The Bloodhounds scored thrice in the bottom of the first taking a 3-1 lead. Rodrigues kicked off the frame with a walk. 
 
Gallaspy sent a hard-hit single up the middle that gave John Jay runners on first and second. The next batter, Sandel, singled. An errant throw by the Bulldogs catcher allowed both Gallaspy and Rodrigues to score, giving John Jay a 3-1 advantage. 
 
In the second, Rodrigues doubled to right center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sandel continued her hot approach at the plate, as she sent a single to right-center, plating Rodrigues for a 4-1 lead. 
 
John Jay continued to add to their total, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, extending their lead to 8-1. 
 
Rodrigues singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Bulldogs' third baseman. A steal from Rodrigues compounded with a single from Gallapsy made it 5-1 in favor of John Jay. 
 
Sandel collected her third hit, a double to right field before both scored on a wild pitch that made it 7-1. Iglesias added an RBI single to center field that plated Bankston making it 8-1.
 
 With one-out, Rodrigues reached on an infield single to shortstop. Gallaspy added another extra-base hit to left, moving Rodrigues to third. A wild pitch brought in Rodrigues as the run-rule was enforced for the win for John Jay. 
 
The Bloodhounds will hit the road as they will travel to Purchase, NY to square off against Manhattanville University on April 16. 
 
First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
