Softball Swept By Manhattanville On Tuesday

Purchase, NY - For the first time since March 14, the John Jay softball team was swept in a doubleheader, falling to the Manhattanville University Valiants, 8-0, and 11-3. 
 
With today's outcome, the Bloodhounds fall to 17-7 while the Valiants move to 15-7. 
 
Game 1 - John Jay 0, Manhattanville 8
In Tuesday's opener, the Bloodhounds were held to just one hit while the Valiants scored two runs in the first and a combined six runs over the third and fourth in posting an 8-0 win. 
 
Elika Rodrigues recorded the lone hit in the opener for the visitors. Jailene Santiago (8-3) took the loss after giving up eight runs (four earned) while walking four and striking out three. 
 
Amaya Esparza led the way with two hits while driving in two RBIs. Samantha Reyer collected three RBIs in the victory. 
 
Charli Shinstine (7-5) allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out 13 batters in five innings to preserve the shutout. 
 
The Valiants scored twice in their half of the first as Esparza singled to center field that scored Isabella Tansey for the first run of the contest. 
 
Rachel Coleman walked before Juliana Parkes singled to right as Esparza advanced to third and scored on an error by the John Jay catcher, making it 2-0. 
 
Following a scoreless second, Manhattanville tacked on three in the third and three more in the fourth to hang on for the win.

The Bloodhounds took an early 3-0 lead, but the Valiants responded with four in the bottom of the second and continued to add to their lead with runs in the fourth and fifth before posting a run-rule win with five in the sixth. 
 
Rodrigues, Maleea Gallaspy and Santiago each had two hits with Santiago connecting on her team-leading 12th home run of the season as she now has 50 RBIs. 
 
Sarah Harker led the way with three hits and three RBIs. Tansey matched Harker with three hits and scored twice. 
 
Samantha Walsh had two RBIs while Coleman, Reyer, and Olivia Fasce each drove in one. 
 
Two straight hits from Rodrigues and Gallaspy gave the Bloodhounds runners on before Rylea Sandel flew out to center. 
 
Santiago clubbed her 12th home run to give John Jay an early 3-0 advantage. 
 
Manhattanville responded with four in the second capped by a two-run, go-ahead double off the bat of Walsh. 
 
Tansey added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, grounding into a double play but scored Alexa Lazur to make it 5-3 in favor of the Valiants. 
 
Coleman produced an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-3 before Manhattanville closed it out with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Harker cleared the bases with a three-run home run that extended the lead to 10-3 before Madison Gonzalez scored on the fielding error from Sandel. 
 
John Jay will return to Purchase, NY on Wednesday, April 17 to square off against the Panthers of Purchase College. 
 
First-pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
