Baseball Falters At Mount Saint Mary On Thursday Afternoon

Newburgh, NY - The John Jay baseball team jumped in front to a 1-0 lead. The Mount Saint Mary Knights responded with a total of seven runs over the next three innings before the visitors staged a three-run fifth inning in cutting the deficit to three, 7-4.

The Knights added three runs in the eighth for the 10-4 victory on Thursday afternoon.

The Bloodhounds fell to 12-14 on the season while the Knights moved to 7-21 overall.

Four Bloodhounds had multi-hit games, led by Santo Anzalone, who finished with two hits and drove in three RBIs. Jaxen Gangwish, Axel Kappes III, and Quentin Bowman joined Anzalone on the multi-hit day.

Marc Weeks (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and walking two batters. Fernando Sladky came on in relief, firing off 2.2 scoreless innings only giving up a hit.

Mark Bowlin made his Bloodhound debut, tossing a third of an inning and recording his first collegiate strikeout.

Luke Barone and Tyler Van De Bogart combined for five hits with Barone going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and driving in a team-high three RBIs.

Adam Leone had two RBIs while Alex Nalewajk, Aidan Marshall, Ryan Lutinski, and Stephen Volk all added an RBI.

Mike Scotto (2-4) went five innings in picking up the win as he allowed four runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Bloodhounds got on the board first as Anzalone delivered a two-out RBI infield single to third base as Bowman scored on the play.

In the bottom of the second, Mount St. Mary sent eight batters to the plate and scored thrice. Barone singled through the left side that plated Van De Bogart, tying the game at 1-1.

A walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Volk, who reached on an error that scored Barone, pushing the Knights ahead, 2-1. The next batter, Nalewajk, singled down the right field line that plated one more as MSMC went ahead 3-1.

In the bottom of the third, Barone singled, scoring Van De Bogart from second, increasing the lead to 4-1 before Barone came around to score from first on the double by Lutinski that made it 5-1.

The Knights continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice in the frame, capped by a double steal of home and second by Chris Calvario and Nalewajk which upped the lead to 7-1.

John Jay fought back in the top of the fifth. Ryan Cherichella started the inning with a single to center. With one out, Kappes III singled, moving Cherichella to second. A walk to Bowman loaded the bases for Anzalone, who promptly doubled down the left-field line which trimmed the deficit to 7-3. Anzalone moved to third as Bowman scored on the wild pitch as John Jay found themselves down three, 7-4.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Van De Bogart walked, loading the bases. The next batter, Leone, singled up the middle, bringing in two runs as the Knights moved ahead, 9-4.

Barone sent a screaming single through the left side, plating one more as the home team went up by six, 10-4.

The Bloodhounds tried to stage a late rally. Anzalone drew a one-out walk before Michael Mauro singled to center field. A walk to John Spallin loaded the bases but all three were stranded as Anthony Agosta struck out to end the game.

The Bloodhounds begin a pivotal CUNYAC stretch of games, as they will take on Baruch College this weekend for a total of four games.

The first two games will be on Friday, April 19 at noon from Maimonides Park before squaring off against the Bearcats on Saturday at Bronx Community College.
