Brooklyn, NY - In game two, the John Jay baseball team trailed 5-0 before staging a four-run bottom of the fifth in cutting the deficit down to one. Baruch added a run in the sixth but a two-run single from Michael Mauro tied the game at 6-6.
The contest
came down to the ninth inning when Santo Anzalone came through for the walk-off RBI single through the left side as the Bloodhounds defeated the Bearcats, 7-6, in the nightcap.
Earlier in game one, the Bloodhounds only mustered one hit as the Bearcats posted a 7-0 victory.
With today's results, John Jay moves to 13-15 and 5-1 in CUNYAC play
while Baruch goes to 4-14 and 3-3 in league play.
These two teams will meet tomorrow at noon from Bronx Community College.
Game 1 - John Jay 0, Baruch 7
The visiting Bearcats scored twice in the first inning and followed up with three in the second and two more in the six while limiting the Bloodhounds to just a second-inning double as John Jay was blanked, 7-0, in game one.
Axel Kappes III had the lone hit, a double down the right field line in the second inning for the home team.
Michael Mauro (3-6)
was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out seven batters. Michael Luongo came on in relief, giving up two runs on two hits in two innings
of work while walking two and striking out three.
Joseph Cocozza and Julian Diaz produced multi-hit games for the visitors
with Cocozza leading the way with three hits. Diaz, who finished with two hits, drove in three of the seven RBIs.
Joseph Bello had two RBIs while Roy Longarzo and Pedro Tejada, Jr. each had one RBI in the victory.
Jeremy Ramirez (3-3) went the distance, surrendering one hit while walking two and striking out ten batters in the shutout.
Petrillo reached on a one-out single before Cocozza added a base hit to right field. Tejada, Jr. reached on a fielding error by
Hayden Tackett at shorts that loaded the bases. Mauro recorded a strikeout of Diaz before giving up a two-run single to left center from Bello as Baruch claimed a 2-0 lead.
The visitors tacked on three more in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Longarzo tripled down the right field line, scoring Benedetto, making it 3-0. Two batters later, Tejada Jr. singled through the left side
which plated Longarzo before Diaz flew out to center, plating Petrillo as the Baruch lead swelled to 5-0.
The score remained that way until the top of the sixth inning. A walk to Petrillo followed by a single from Cocozza gave Baruch the first two runners
on. The pair moved into scoring position on a balk before Tejada worked a four-pitch walk to load the bases.
The next batter, Diaz, doubled down the left field line that plated
both Petrillo and Cocozza, extending the lead to 7-0.
Ramirez struck out Anzalone on seven pitches before getting Mauro to line out
to right and striking out Kappes III looking at strike three.
Game 2 - John Jay 7, Baruch 6 | 9 Innings
The Bloodhounds trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth when John Jay staged a four-run inning to trail by one.
Baruch added an insurance run in the sixth
but the resilient Bloodhounds evened the score in the bottom of the seventh, pushing the game to extras.
In the bottom of the ninth, Anzalone came up with the timely hit, sending the Bloodhounds' bench into a frenzy as John Jay recorded the come-from-behind victory, 7-6.
Anzalone was one of four Bloodhounds to have multi-hits in the contest.
Jaxen Gangwish led the way with three hits and two RBIs.
John Spallin and
Michael Mauro each matched Anzalone with two hits with Mauro also being credited with two RBIs. Spallin, Anzalone, and Ryan Cherichella also added an RBI in the comeback.
Alvy Grullon worked five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out six
but didn't factor into the decision. Sean Lynch faced three batters, walking all three before
David Michalski (4-1) came on to work four innings of scoreless relief, giving up just two hits, a walk and striking out four.
Joseph Bello had three hits for the visitors
with Tejada Jr. driving in three of the five RBIs. Petrillo and Bello were each credited with an RBI. Starter Ryan Foerst went five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits while not walking a batter and striking out three.
Maxwell Murray (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings, as he walked two batters and struck out five.
Baruch started the inning with two straight hits before both Petrillo and Longarzo moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A second straight wild pitch plated home Longarzo for the game's first run.
Two walks to Tejada and Diaz reloaded the bases for Bello, who flew out to right field as Petrillo tagged up from third for the second run of the game.
Baruch added to their lead in the top of the fifth.
With one out in the stanza, Petrillo singled to right center before Cocozza was hit by a pitch. Tejada Jr. stepped in
and on the seventh pitch of the at-bat, he delivered a no-doubter over the left field wall as the Bearcats held a 5-0 edge.
John Jay stirred and rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tackett reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and moved to second as the ball trickled into the outfield.
Anthony Agosta singled through the right
side gave the Bloodhounds runners on the corner. The next hitter, Chericella, singled to right, scoring Tackett to put John Jay on the board.
Gangwish continued his hot approach at the dish, doubling and moving to third on the throwback
in as Agosta and Cherichella scored, cutting the lead to two, 5-3. Spallin flew out to center and scored Gangwish as the Bloodhounds narrowed the gap
further down to one, 5-4.
The Bearcats got on back in the top of the sixth. Lynch issued three straight walks before Michalski came on. Petrillo greeted him with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Benedetto, pushing the Bearcats lead to two, 6-4.
Gangwish started the John Jay seventh inning with a single to right center and moved up on a wild pitch. Spallin grounded out the second and moved Gangwish
over to third with one out. Quentin Bowman was plunked by a pitch before Anzalone struck out looking.
Mauro worked the count to 2-2 before a bloop single to right scored the tying run as
the game was knotted at 6-6.
The visitors had a chance in the top of the ninth as Bello singled to right
but Tejada was thrown out trying to score.
In the bottom half, Gangwish walked before Spallin singled to center field. Following a strikeout of Bowman, Anzalone took the 1-0 pitch through the left side
which scored Gangwish as the bench erupted with joy.
