Softball Falls At Farmingdale On Thursday Afternoon

Farmingdale, NY - The John Jay softball team dropped their road doubleheader contest at Farmingdale State, 5-1 and 8-3, on Thursday afternoon. 

With the outcome, the Bloodhounds fall to 19-9 overall on the season while the Rams move to 19-7. 

Game 1 - John Jay 1, Farmingdale State 5

The Bloodhounds struck for the early lead before the Rams found the tying score in the bottom of the first and added four runs between the third and fourth innings as Farmingdale State defeated John Jay, 5-1, in the opener of Thursday's doubleheader. 

John Jay collected four hits as Maleea Gallaspy, Rylea Sandel, Jailene Santiago, and Kelly Fajardo all had a hit. Sandel drove in the lone RBI for the visitors. 

Santiago (8-4) took the loss after giving up five runs on 12 hits. The Albany, NY native didn't walk a batter and had one strikeout.

The Rams had three players record a multi-hit game, led by Jenna Giliberti, who finished with three hits and an RBI. Bailey Hammock recorded two hits and scored twice while Madison Sturtz also added a pair of hits. 

Angelina Capuano and Samantha Stolfi matched Giliberti with an RBI in the contest. 

Allie Stanya (11-2) recorded her 11th win of the season after tossing a complete-game four-hitter. She gave up one run while walking one and striking out ten batters. 

With one out in the top of the first, Gallaspy doubled to left field. Sandel stepped up and singled to center but was caught in a rundown that allowed Gallaspy to cross the plate for the first run of the game. 

In the bottom of the inning, Hammock singled to right center and moved to second after a successful steal. Hammock later came into score on a wild pitch to even the game at 1-1. 

Farmingdale State staged a three-run bottom of the third in taking a 4-1 advantage. Giliberti led off with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position after stealing second. 

Hammock moved her to third on a base knock to right center. The next batter, Capuano reached on a bunt single up the first base line, scoring Giliberti. Hammock came around to score on a wild pitch that made it 3-1. 

Stolfi reached on a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt that plated home Capuano for the fourth run for the Rams. 

In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Giliberti singled home Sturtz which increased the lead to 5-1. 

Stanya retired the last four batters in preserving the win for Farmingdale. 

Game 2 - John Jay 3, Farmingdale State 8
John Jay trailed 7-0 after four innings but managed to get back in the contest with three in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the Rams tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to hold on for an 8-3 win in game two. 

Gallaspy led the way for the visitors with two hits and an RBI while Sandel, Santiago, and Jordyn Prince added a hit. Santiago plated a pair of RBIs for John Jay. 

Lindsay Ogden (8-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out one. Ciaran Iglesias worked the final two frames, giving up a run on three hits and issuing two walks. 

Stolfi powered Farmingdale with three hits in three trips as she was credited with four of the eight RBIs. Ava Shorr added three hits while Anna Rahner drove in two RBIs. Capuano and Ashley Toro each finished with an RBI. 

In addition to her three hits, Shorr earned the complete game win, giving up three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out seven for her seventh victory of the season. 

Farmingdale State got four runs on four hits in their half of the first. Capuano singled to center and brought in Giliberti for the game's first run. 

Stolfi followed with a run-scoring single up the middle that made it 2-0. A double from Shorr brought up Rahner, who sent a grounder to second that plated the third run of the stanza. 

Toro reached on an infield single back to Ogden as Shorr scored to give the home team a four-run cushion. 

The Rams added two more in the bottom of the inning as Stolfi delivered a two-run single, extending the lead to 6-0. 

Farmingdale added one score in their half of the fourth as Stolfi reached on an infield hit that scored Giliberti, increasing the lead to 7-0. 

The visitors got back in the contest with three runs in the top of the fifth. Fajardo led off with a walk before being forced out at second. With two outs, Gallaspy tripled to right center field, bringing in Elika Rodrigues for the Bloodhounds' first run of the contest. 

A walk to Sandel brought up Santiago, who laced a double to left center, scoring both Gallaspy and Sandel, cutting the deficit to four, 7-3. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Rahner found space through the left side, sending an RBI single as the lead swelled to 8-3. 

John Jay threatened in the seventh. Prince led off with a single up the middle. With one out, Gallaspy singled to center that gave the visitors a chance. Sandel flew out to right field as Prince alertly tagged up and moved to third. Santiago sent a hotshot to short to end the ballgame. 

The Bloodhounds resume CUNYAC play on Saturday, April 20 as they will square off against Hunter College at noon.
