Softball Splits Doubleheader With Hunter On Tuesay Afternoon

New York, NY - The John Jay softball team resumed CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play on Tuesday afternoon, splitting their doubleheader with the Hunter College Hawks, winning game one, 3-2, before being walk-offed in the nightcap, 8-7. 

With the results, the Bloodhounds move to 20-10 overall and 5-1 in the league while the Hawks move to 7-11 and 3-1 in the league

Game 1 - John Jay 3, Hunter 2

John Jay opened the contest with a run in the first and second before the Hawks responded with a score in the bottom of the third and fourth. The game remained knotted at 2-2 until the top of the seventh when Rylea Sandel scored on a fielding error by the pitcher as the Bloodhounds picked up a 3-2 victory in game one. 

Sandel led John Jay, going 3 for 3 in the opener with a run scored. Jailene Santiago added two hits with Sidney Bankston and newly-minted CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Alyssa Cadolino, driving in an RBI each for the visitors. 

Santiago moved to 9-4 on the season, posting her 24th career game in the process as the Albany, NY native allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out eight batters. 

Paige Witalec and Sonia Rosales Rosenthal each had two hits for the Hawks with Jessica Fowler driving in the lone RBI for the home team in the setback. 

T'ea Panagakos tossed four innings, in which she allowed two runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out and not factoring into the decision. Alyssa Curiale took the loss, allowing the go-ahead score despite not walking a batter and striking out three. 

John Jay got on the board in the first inning. With one-out, Maleea Gallaspy walked. Sandel moved her to second on a single to left before Santiago reached on an infield single to second that loaded the bases. 

Cadolino belted a single to centerfield that scored Gallaspy, but a baserunning mishap ran the Bloodhounds out of the inning. The visitors went ahead 2-0 on Bankston first home run of the season to commence the second inning. 

Hunter got on the board in the bottom of the third as Samantha Marsala reached on an error by the third baseman, that allowed Sophia Perez to cross the plate. The Hawks evened the game at 2-2 as Fowler connected on a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth.

he game remained tied at 2-2 until the top of the seventh. With two outs, Sandel singled to center field before Santiago reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. 

Ciaran Iglesias came on and reached on a fielding error by the pitcher as Santiago moved to third while Sandel scored the go-ahead run.  Santiago struck out the first batter she saw in the bottom of the seventh before getting Olivia Palumbo to pop out to second and Perez flying out to center to notch John Jay's 20th win of the season. 

Game 2 - John Jay 7, Hunter 8 
The Bloodhounds got off to a fast start in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first but were quickly answered with four runs by Hunter over the second and third innings. 

John Jay staged a three-run top of the fifth and netted one more in the sixth before the Hawks cut the deficit in their half of the sixth and ultimately walked it off in the bottom of the seventh, as John Jay dropped an 8-7 decision in the nightcap. 

Cadolino was the catalyst in the second game, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Elika Rodrigues added two hits while Gallaspy drove in two RBIs. 

Lindsay Ogden (8-4) allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits while issuing three walks an struck out six batters in taking the hard-pressed loss. 

Fowler led the way for the Hawks with three hits and three runs scored while connecting on the game-winner and driving in a total of five RBIs. Palumbo was credited with the other RBI while Witalec added two hits for the victorious Hawks. 

Brielle Staskavage went 2.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Curiale came on in relief, surrendering three runs on a hit, three walks, and two strikeouts.  Panagakos earned the win after working two innings, allowing one run on four hits while fanning two batters. 

Rodrigues started off the contest with a double to right center before coming into score on Gallaspy's third home run of the season. 
Hunter got on the board as Palumbo grounded out to second, scoring Adriana Ramirez, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1. 

With two outs in the top of the third, Sandel uncorked a solo home run to center, her third of the season and 15th of her John Jay career, as the Bloodhounds went ahead 3-1. 

The Hawks answered back with a three-run bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Marsala worked a two-out walk before scoring on a the single to center from Ramirez as Kelly Fajardo misplayed it, allowing Marsala to score. Fowler came up and connected on a two-run homer that gave Hunter the lead before Ogden got Thompson to ground out, ending the threat. 

Following a scoreless fourth, the Bloodhound regained the lead. Two straight walks to Gallaspy and Sandel moved the line to Santiago, who was retired on a line out to right, not before both runners advanced a base. 

The next batter, Cadolino, smashed a towering, three-run home run to center, as John Jay went ahead 6-3. John Jay added one more run in the sixth, stretching their lead to 7-4. Fajardo reached on an infield single to short before moving on a wild pitch following a strike out to Jordyn Prince.The next batter, Rodrigues, singled home Fajardo and moved to second. The inning continued as Gallaspy reached on fielder's choice to short with Rodrigues moving to third on the play. A wild pitch brought Gallaspy to second but both runners were stranded as Sandel was called out looking at strike three. 

Hunter narrowed the gap in the bottom of the inning as Perez reached on an error by Angelina Schoelles at second that scored Fowler, making it 7-5 in favor of John Jay. 

Back-to-back singles from Santiago and Cadolino ignited the seventh inning for John Jay. Kayla Sauers, who came on as pinch-hitter, sacrificed them over. Bankston reached on a fielder's choice as Cadolino moved up a bag but Brianna Cornejo, running for Santiago, was out at the plate. Both runners were stranded on the ground out by Fajardo. 

Witalec started the Hawks' rally with a double to left field. Nicole Bowe reached on an infield single to third that moved Witalec to third following the throw. 

Ogden got Marsala to ground out to Sandel at short and struck out Ramirez as John Jay was one out away from the doubleheader sweep. Fowler stepped in and won it for Hunter, connecting on the game-winning three-run home run to center field as the Hawks salvaged the split. 

John Jay resumes their road trip on Wednesday afternoon as they will head to Weehawken, NJ to tangle with the Stevens Ducks. 

First-pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
