Baseball Falls In Doubleheader At Baruch On Tuesday Afternoon

New Rochelle, NY - The John Jay baseball team squandered leads in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader, falling to the Baruch College Bearcats, 8-1 and 6-5.

With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 13-17 overall and 5-3 in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play while the Bearcats move to 6-14 and match John Jay with an identical 5-3 league mark.

Game 1 - John Jay 1, Baruch 8
John Jay jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before Baruch responded with six runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth in defeating the Bloodhounds, 8-1., in game one of Tuesday's twinbill.

CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Jaxen Gangwish, Hayden Tackett, and Anthony Agosta each had a hit for the visitors. Agosta drove in the lone run for the Bloodhounds.

Sean Jost (3-3) allowed eight runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out three in his four innings of work. Michael Luongo gave up a hit and struck out two in working two scoreless innings.

Joseph Cocozza went 3 for 3 with two runs. Julian Diaz had two hits and drove in three RBIs. Benjamin Luciano finished with a hit and two RBIs while Roy Longarzo and Joseph Bello added an RBI as well.

Nicholas LaPointe (1-0) pitched a complete game three-hitter, allowing one run while walking two and striking out six batters.

The two teams exchanged zeroes over the first two innings before the Bloodhounds got on the board in the top of the third.

Tackett opened the John Jay third inning with a double. Agosta followed suit with a double that plated Tackett for the game's first run.

John Jay threatened for more as Gangwish singled and moved to second. Agosta was out trying to score the second run of the game as the centerfielder threw out Agosta at the plate.

Baruch responded with six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 6-1 lead. Christopher Petrillo, Cocozza, and Pedro Tejada Jr. all singled to load the bases.

The next batter, Diaz, plated Cocozza and Petrillo on Baruch's fourth consecutive hit, as they took a 2-1 lead.

Bello recorded the fifth straight hit, a double, that scored Tejada Jr., upping the lead to 3-1. Luciano recorded the second extra-base knock, a double, that scored a pair, increasing the lead to 5-1.

Two batters later, Longarzo, tripled that scored Luciano, as Baruch extended their lead to 6-1.

The Bearcats weren't finished adding to their advantage, as in the top of the fifth, Diaz singled to score Cocozza, making it 7-1 before Tejada scored on a 6-4-3 double play off the bat from Bello that upped the lead to 8-1.

Reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week Santo Anzalone walked to start the seventh inning. Michael Mauro hit into a double play before Ryan Cherichella flew out to end the contest.

Game 2 - John Jay 5, Baruch 6 (9 innings)
Both teams scored a run in their half of the first before the Bloodhounds added two scores in the second and third, taking a 4-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, the Bearcats staged a three-run frame before scoring the tying run in the bottom of the fifth and walking it off in the bottom of the ninth, as John Jay fell 6-5.

Gangwish and Anzalone each recorded three hits with Gangwish and Tackett plating two RBIs apiece. Anzalone plated the fifth RBI for the visitors in game two.

Axel Kappes III worked five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) while walking three and striking out six as he didn't factor into the decision.

David Michalski (4-2) pitched 3.1 frames, giving up the game-winner on two hits while walking four and striking out two batters.

Longarzo and Cocozza each had two hits with Bello and Diaz combining for all five RBIs, as Bello had three and Diaz with two, highlighted by the walk-off fielder's choice in which Cocozza scored.

Jude Jackson tossed three innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out two batters.

Benjamin Norwood hurled three scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out two.

Maxwell Murray (1-1) finished the contest for his first win of the season, walking three and striking out one as he gave up a hit in his three innings.

Gangwish continued his hot-hitting approach, doubling to start the contest. With two outs, Anzalone singled in Gangwish for the first run of the contest.

Longarzo singled to start the Baruch first and promptly stole second. He moved to third on a ground out from Petrillo. The next batter, Cocozza reached on an error by the centerfielder as Longarzo scored to tie the game at 1-1.

Agosta reached on a one-out single before moving to second. Isaac Salazar reached on a fielding error by the Bearcats' third baseman, which gave the Bloodhounds two runners on.

Gangwish tripled home both Salazar and Agosta as John Jay reclaimed a 3-1 lead. The Bloodhounds added to their count, scoring two more in the top of the third off a Tackett two-run single that made it 5-1.

Baruch cut the deficit down to one, 5-4, in the bottom of the third, as the big blast in the inning came off the bat of Bello, who produced a bases-clearing triple.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when Diaz came through with the game-tying RBI single, scoring Cocozza, who reached on a one-out single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Michalski allowed a leadoff single in the ninth to Cocozza and he moved to second on a balk. Michalski got Tejada to ground out to third.

Cocozza stole third and Diaz reached on a fielder's choice, as the throw home was late as Baruch walked it off.

The Bloodhounds return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 24 as they will take on NJCU.

First-pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
