Baseball Drops Road Non-Conference Tilt At New Jersey City University

Jersey City, NJ - The John Jay baseball team found themselves in an early 5-0 deficit before the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights scored four runs in three of the final four innings as the Bloodhounds fell 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, John Jay falls to 13-18 overall while NJCU moves to 13-20.

Ryan Cherichella led the way for the visitors with three hits in five trips. Axel Kappes III recorded two hits while David Michalski and Raheem Dolah drove in an RBI each for the Bloodhounds.

Michael Mauro (3-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (one earned) in 4.2 innings on seven hits as he walked two and struck out one.

Brandon Piacenza paced the Gothic Knights with three hits and three RBIs. Arian Lunar chipped in two hits and two RBIs while John Abrahamsen, Dom Yarson, and Enrique Beltra also produced an RBI.

Ronnie Wallraff went 5.2 innings in picking up his second win of the season as he allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five. NJCU's three relievers: Danny Olear, Yannid Narvaez, and D.J. Dekis combined to allow just one hit over 3.1 frames while striking out four batters as Narvaez finished with three strikeouts.

The Gothic Knights tallied five runs in their opening half of the first. Allo laced a one-out triple to center before coming home on a fielding error by the John Jay first baseman. Beltra walked and Bryan Fernandez singled to left center to load the bases for Piacenza, who singled through the left side scoring two which extended the NJCU lead to 3-0. Lunar capped the five-run inning with a two-run single up the middle that increased the lead to 5-0.

NJCU added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Beltra lined out to centerfield as Yarson tagged up from third as the home team led 6-0.

John Jay got on the board in the top of the sixth. Kappes III was hit by a pitch before Isaac Salazar singled through the left side. Hayden Tackett placed a well-executed sacrifice bunt that advanced both Salazar and Kappes III up a base.

Vincent Gangone was plunked by a pitch with two-outs to load the bases. Michalski came on as a pinch-hitter and was also hit scoring Kappes III for the Bloodhounds' first run of the contest. The next batter, Dolah, was the fourth John Jay hitter to be hit with an errant pitch as Salazar crossed the plate.

NJCU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on the RBI base knock from Piacenza to centerfield before an RBI grounder from Abrahamsen and Lunar scoring on a throwing error plated the final two runs for the home team.

John Jay resumes CUNYAC play on Sunday, April 28 as they will host CCNY at FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ.
