Softball Splits Twinbill With Stevens On Wednesday

Weehawken, NJ - The John Jay College softball team regrouped in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader, holding off Stevens, 3-2 after dropping the first game, 10-0 in five innings.

With the results, the Bloodhounds move to 21-11 while the Ducks improve to 15-19.
Game 1 - John Jay 0, Stevens 10 (5 innings)
The Bloodhounds were unsuccessful in getting to Stevens starter Kyra Fischer, as Elika Rodrigues garnered the lone hit in game one as John Jay fell 10-0 in five innings.

Five Ducks had multi-hit games, as Madison Subbiondo and Fischer each had three hits with Subbiondo, Fischer, and Elizabeth Kirstein each having two RBIs for Stevens.

Ciaran Iglesias (3-3) took the loss for the Bloodhounds while Fischer earned her ninth win of the season, allowing just the one hit while walking one and striking out five.

Rodrigues led off the game with an infield single to third base.

The Ducks sparked a three-run bottom of the first. Jessica Guerrero started things off for the home team with an infield single to short and stole second. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third before Emma Quattrochi singled her in for the first run of the contest.

With two outs, Subbiondo homered to give Stevens a 2-0 lead before Fischer helped her own cause, doubling up the middle for the third run of the frame.

Stevens added two more in the bottom of the third to go up 5-0. Fischer was the catalyst, reaching on a bunt single that scored Subbiondo from third, upping the lead to 4-0. Kirstein brought in Rachael Prescott on the sacrifice fly to left which made it a five-run advantage.

The Ducks put the finishing touches to game one, scoring five runs in the frame for the run-rule win, as Guerrero delivered a one-out solo home run.

Two batters later, Subbiondo sent a ground-rule double to left that scored Adrianna Albano from second, increasing the lead to 7-0.  Prescott reached on a fielder choice, bunt that scored Subbiondo and a muffed throw by the Bloodhounds' catcher plated home Quattrochi for the ninth run of the contest.

Kirstein lofted a sacrifice fly to left scoring Prescott as Stevens went ahead 10-0 and held on by that margin.

Game 2 - John Jay 3, Stevens 2

Both pitchers exchanged zeros over the first three innings before the Bloodhounds struck first with a run in the top of the fourth.

The visitors added two more scores in the top of the seventh and held off the Ducks comeback attempt in earning the split, 3-2, in game two.

Lindsay Ogden (9-4) earned the win after posting her 11th complete game of the season, as the first-year Bloodhound allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out two.

Kelly Fajardo and Kayla Sauers each had three hits while the pair along with Jordyn Prince drove in an RBI. Sandel and Bankston each had two hits for the visitors.

Guerrero, Quattrochi, Maria Dante, Emma Ruiz, and Emily Wohlleber all had a hit for the Ducks, with Quattrochi and Wohlleber driving in an RBI each.

Ella Tozduman also pitched a complete game but was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on 12 hits despite walking only three and striking out three.

Both pitchers recorded zeros until the top of the fourth when the Bloodhounds got on the board. Bankston started the inning with a single to left.

With one-out, Fajardo and Kayla Sauers each reached on singles before Prince sent a shot up the middle, scoring Bankston for the first run of the contest.

Ogden retired seven straight until Ruiz tripled to right field in the fifth, but her defense backed her, as Fajardo threw a strike to get Ruiz out at the plate.

The score remained a one-run advantage until the top of the seventh, when John Jay added two more. Sandel singled to left before Jailene Santiago walked. With two outs, Fajardo singled to right center, scoring Sandel before Sauers added a run-scoring single to second that scored Angelina Schoelles as John Jay led 3-0.

Stevens mounted a comeback. Quattrochi led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run for the Ducks first run of the game.

Subbiondo reached on an error before Dante singled to left to give Stevens a pair of runners. With one out, Wohlleber brought in Subbiondo on a RBI single to left as she moved to second on the throw, as the home team cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

Ogden regained her composure inside the circle, striking out Joy Pikul and Kirstein to end the game.
