Baseball Stages Late Rallies In Both Games Of Doubleheader But Fall Short Against CCNY On Sunday Afternoon

Madison, NJ - The John Jay baseball were resilient in staging comeback attempts in both games of their Sunday doubleheader against CCNY but were thwarted as the Bloodhounds fell 11-6 in game one and 8-7 in the nightcap. 

With the results, John Jay falls to 13-20 overall and 5-5 in CUNYAC play while CCNY moves to 11-19 and 8-2 in league contests. 

Game 1 - John Jay 6, CCNY 11

The Bloodhounds got off to a fast start with a run in their half of the first, but the visiting Beavers tied it up in the third and proceeded to score five runs in the fifth and sixth innings. 

John Jay rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs but it wasn't enough as the Beavers held on for a 11-6 victory. 

Jaxen Gangwish continues to be a spark for the Bloodhounds at the top of the order, as he finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. John Spallin matched Gangwish with two RBIs while Santo Anzalone registered two hits. 

Michael Mauro (3-8) took the loss after throwing five innings, giving up six runs (four earned) while walking two and striking out four batters. 

Eight of the nine CCNY batters notched a hit with Colin Souther, Stephen Suprun, and Bryan Lopez collecting two hits apieceJake Brenner recorded three RBIs while Rich Cirigliano and Souther finished with two RBIs. 

Brandon Paider picked up his fifth win of the season after going the distance, giving up six runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out one. 

John Jay got on the board first. Gangwish led with a single to right field before moving to second on a wild pitch. Spallin doubled down the right-field line to bring in brought in Gangwish for the first run. 
In the top of the third, the Beavers knotted the game at 1-1. 

Lopez
 drew a one-out walk before stealing second. He moved over to third on a ground out by Tyler DiBlasi. The next batter, Kevin Budzinski, tripled to left center to tie the game. 
CCNY staged the first of their five-run innings in the top of the fifth as the Beavers batted around in the inning. 

DiBlasi broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI single up the middle. Following a walk to Budzinski, Cirigliano delivered a two-run single to center that pushed the lead to 4-1. Michael Chasanov lofted a sacrifice fly to left that made it 5-1. Souther continued his productive day, singling up the middle to plate the sixth run of the contest for the visitors. 

CCNY ignited a five-run sixth in building an 11-1 advantage. Souther and Suprun each delivered an RBI single that increased the lead to 8-1 before Brenner cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center field. 

The Bloodhounds rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Axel Kappes III led off with a walk before moving to second on a pinch-hit single from Ryan CherichellaAnthony Agosta singled through the left side that loaded the bases. Kappes III came into score on a passed ball. 

With one out, Gangwish delivered a ground-rule double that plated both Agosta and Cherichella.
Quentin Bowman singled through the left side to keep the momentum rolling. Spalling sent a dribbler up the first base line that plated Gangwish, trimming CCNY's lead down to 11-5. 

Anzalone had a hard-hit single through the right side that scored Bowman, as John Jay inched closer, 11-6. Mauro flew out on the first pitch he saw to center to end the game. 

Game 2 - John Jay 7, CCNY 8

CCNY got on the board first before the Bloodhounds scored two in taking the early game-two lead. 
The visitors tacked on four runs in the second and three over the fourth and fifth innings, taking an 8-3 leadThe Bloodhounds, like in game one, staged a late rally with four runs in the bottom of the seventh but the comeback fell short, falling 8-7. 

Bowman and Cherichella each had three hits with Bowman leading the way with three RBIs. Spallin and Mauro had two hits with Gangwish, Spallin, and Cherichella each producing an RBI. 

Kappes III (2-3) went 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits and walked four.  Michael Luongo came on in relief, throwing 1.1 innings in which he gave up a run on two hits. 
David Michalski finished the game, firing two innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit, a walk, and a strikeout. 

DiBlasi, Chasanov, Brenner, and Lopez all had two hits for the Beavers with Budzinski driving in three RBIs. Brenner added two while Chasanov and Lopez chipped in an RBI. 

Erik Rank earned his sixth win of the season, allowing three runs on nine hits despite walking four. 
Jack Daly earned the save after giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two. 

Kappes III got the leadoff batter before issuing back-to-back walks to Budzinski and Cirigliano. Chasanov reached on a fielding error that scored Budzinski for the game's first run. 

In the bottom of the frame, Gangwish commenced with a walk before stealing second. He moved to third on a ground out by Spallin and came in to tie the game on a wild pitch. Anzalone was hit by a pitch before Mauro walked on five pitches. Cherichella worked the count in his favor to 3-1 before lacing a single to right, scoring Anzalone to break the 1-1 tie. 

CCNY sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the second as they scored four runs in taking a 5-2 lead. Suprun and Brenner singled before being moved up on the Mike Savino sacrifice bunt. Lopez tied the game with a hard-hit grounder to short that scored Suprun. 

DiBlasi was hit by a pitch that gave the Beavers runners on the cornerBudzinski ripped a double to left that increased the CCNY lead to 4-2. Chasanov singled to left that brought in Budzinski for the fifth run of the game. 

John Jay inched closer in the bottom of the second. A walk to Agosta and a single by Kappes III gave the Bloodhounds a pair of runners. With one out, Bowman singled back up the middle to plate home Agosta, trimming the lead to 5-3. 

CCNY added two more scores in the top of the fourth as Brenner brought in a pair on the RBI single to center field as the Beavers led 7-3. The Beavers tacked on another run as Budzinski sent a sacrifice fly to center with Lopez tagging up and scoring, making it an 8-3 advantage. 

The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh. Cherichella reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Agosta sent a one-out single to center. Isaac Salazar was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases for Gangwish, who singled to left, cutting the deficit in half, 8-4. 

Bowman continued his hot hitting in game two, doubling to left field that plated Agosta and Salazar, as John Jay inched closer, 8-6. Spallin sent a first-pitch single to right field that scored Gangwish as the Bloodhounds trailed 8-7 with runners on the corner. 

Anzalone was called out looking at strike three on the inside corner and Mauro sent a towering drive to center but was corralled by the center fielder for the final out. 

The Bloodhounds head to Purchase, NY on Tuesday, April 30 as they will tangle with Manhattanville University at 3:30 p.m.
