Alvy Grullon's First Career Complete Game Propels Bloodhounds To 5-1 Road Victory At Manhattanville

Purchase, NY - First-year southpaw Alvy Grullon spun a gem on Tuesday afternoon, notching his first career complete game as the John Jay baseball team posted a 5-1 road triumph at Manhattanville.

With the win, the Bloodhounds snapped a five-game losing streak to move to 14-20 overall while the Valiants fall to 17-19 on the season.

Grullon, making his fifth start of the season, earned his second win of the year as the Bronx, NY native went the distance, as he didn't walk a batter and only gave up a run on six hits. Grullon struck out four batters in his first career complete game.

Ryan Cherichella led the way at the plate for the visitors, going 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Jaxen Gangwish, Santo Anzalone, and Hayden Tackett also drove in a run. Axel Kappes III matched Cherichella with two hits and scored two runs in the victory.

Jake Parisi led the Valiants with two hits. Justin Encarnacion, Anthony Mezzaucella, Marco Clara, and Ryan Osso all had a hit with Clara driving in the lone RBI for the home team.

Chris Antonelli suffered his first loss of the season after giving up three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. He issued four walks and had a strikeout. Ryan Costa came on and threw 5.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Joseph Lacoparra finished the game, hurling two scoreless innings, giving up a hit, and striking out a batter.

Following a scoreless first inning of play, the Bloodhounds sent nine guys up to the plate in a second inning that saw the visitors score three runs for the early lead. With two outs, Kappes III and Tackett walked before Gangwish was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

The next batter, Cherichella, laced a single back up the middle, scoring both Tackett and Kappes III for a 2-0. John Spallin was plunked by a pitch to reload the bases for Anzalone, who walked, bringing in Gangwish for the third run.

John Jay tacked on a run in the top of the third as Tackett sent a deep fly to centerfield, which scored Quentin Bowman, who reached first on a wild pitch after striking out swinging.

Manhattanville got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Two straight hits from Mezzaucella and Parisi gave the Valiants a pair of runners for Clara, who doubled to right field scoring Mezzaucella, and trimming the lead to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Bloodhounds pushed across another score. Kappes III and Tackett singled and moved to second and third, respectively. Gangwish lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Kappes III to make it 5-1.

Grullon continued his dominance on the mound. After allowing a single by Osso to start the bottom of the fifth, the southpaw retired the final 15 batters he faced, striking out three in the process.

John Jay will head to Danbury, CT on Wednesday, May 1 as they take on WestConn
