Baseball Falls At WestConn On Wednesday

Danbury, CT - The John Jay baseball team cut a 12-0 deficit to 12-7 in the fifth inning before the WestConn Wolves sparked an eight-run bottom of the frame in defeating the Bloodhounds, 20-9on Wednesday afternoon. 

With the loss, John Jay falls to 14-21 on the year while the Wolves move to 6-25 on the season. 

Anthony Agosta led the way with three hits. John Spallin notched two hits on the afternoon. Axel Kappes III drove in a team-high four RBIsSanto Anzalone, Vincent Gangone, and Hayden Tackett all added an RBI as well. 

Stanley Roman powered the Wolves at the plate, going 4 for 6 with three runs scored and tallying a game-best seven RBIs. Anthony Marsala went 2 for 4, scoring two runs while driving in three. Jesse Dunn, Peter Coniglio, and Richard Salonia all had two hits with Dunn, Coniglio, Nicholas Moeller, and Bryan Birkl all adding two RBIs in the win. 

Michael Lonergan took the loss after giving up eight runs on one hit and walking seven batters on the afternoon. Fernando Sladky worked the eighth, pitching a clean inning, and striking out two batters. 

Brian Mansfield worked 4.2 frames, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking five and striking out three batters in earning his fourth win of the season. 

In the bottom of the first, the Wolves sent batted around, sending up 15 batters to the plate in which WestConn scored nine runs on just three hits in the inning.  The first three batters each drew a walk before Roman doubled down the left-field line in scored a pair for the game's first runs. Lonergan got the next two batters out before issuing four straight walks as John Jay went to the bullpen with Saujan Christie coming in for Lonergan. Christie walked the first batter he saw before Moeller singled through the left side plating two more runs before Roman connected on his third RBI of the inning as the lead swelled to 9-0. 

WestConn tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second as they increased the lead to 12-0. Birkl sent a two-out single to right and moved to third on a misplay by the John Jay right fielder which made it 10-0. Dunn and Coniglio each doubled to left as they brought in a run each. 

The Bloodhounds scored their first run of the contest in the top of the third. Tackett singled to left center before Kappes III walked. A single by Ryan Cherichella loaded the bases. Spallin sent a frozen rope that was snagged by the shortstop, who fired over to third for the second out. Anzalone reached on a first on a fielding error by the third baseman that scored Tackett. 

Christie settled in and worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the third. Kappes III sent a sacrifice fly to right that scored Agosta, who was hit by a pitch.  

The Bloodhounds continued to mount their comeback in the top of the fifth. Spallin led off the inning with a single to center field. With one out, Michael Mauro ripped a single before Isaac Salazar walked to load the bases. With two outs, Gangone and Tackett each worked a bases-loaded free pass, as the Bloodhounds trailed 12-4Luke Paluska came on to face Kappes III, who cleared the bases on a double to right field that brought the visitors to within five, 12-7. 

The Wolves responded with an eight-run bottom of the fifth. Marsala connected on a two-run single to left that pushed the lead to 15-7 following Roman scoring on the fielding error by Tackett at short. Roman continued his torrid streak against the Bloodhounds, clubbing a grand slam to center field that pushed the WestConn lead to 20-7. 

Spallin remained hot at the plate, doubling to center field. Anzalone brought him on the single to left center. A walk to Mauro, followed by a one-out single to left from Agosta knocked Paluska from the contest. 
Zachary Barry relieved Paluska and struck out Gangone for the second outA wild pitch brought in the final run of the game as Anzalone scored from third. 

Sladky came on in the bottom of the eighth, as he got the pinch-hitter Eric Flores to strike out before striking out Abdel Razeq and Anthony Cusimano. 

The Bloodhounds will conclude their midweek schedule on Thursday, May 2 as they will take on the Old Westbury Panthers. The Bloodhounds will be the home team against the Panthers at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex with first-pitch set for 4:00 p.m.
