Baseball Opens Up CUNYAC Play With Sweep Of Defending League Champions, CCNY, On Saturday Afternoon

New Rochelle, NY - The John Jay baseball team opened up CUNYAC play on Saturday, sweeping the defending league champion CCNY Beavers, 9-7 and 11-5. 
 
With the wins, the Bloodhounds move to 9-12 overall while the Beavers fall to 5-16 overall. 
 
For John Jay, they snapped an eight-game losing streak to CCNY and last won back-to-back games against the Beavers nearly five years to the date (April 5). 
 
Game 1 | John Jay 9, CCNY 7
John Jay opened the game with two runs but the defending CUNYAC champions answered back with three runs of their own to take a one-run lead.  In the top of the sixth, the Bloodhounds took a 5-3 lead following a three-run inning but CCNY responded with a three-run bottom of the frame to take a one-run lead.  In the top of the seventh, the visitors continued their offensive output, tallying four runs and halting a comeback from the Beavers as John Jay posted a 9-7 win in the conference lidlifter. 

John Spallin led the way, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored, a home run, and drove in three RBIs. Santo Anzalone collected two hits and drove in a pair. Quentin Bowman, Michael Mauro, Anthony Agosta, and Ryan Cherichella each added an RBI in the victory. 

Sean Jost took the start for the Bloodhounds, going five innings, allowing six runs, on seven hits while walking two and striking out three and not factoring into the decision. David Michalski (2-1) picked up his second win the season, going two innings in which he gave up one run on three hits and fanned two batters. 
 
CCNY's Rich Cirigliano, Michael Chasanov, and Jake Brenner each had two hits in the opener with Cirigliano and Stephen Suprun driving in a pair of RBIs. 

Brandon Paider (2-5) took the loss after giving up eight runs on 11 hits over 6.2 innings while adding seven strikeouts to his ledger. Jack Daly allowed a run on a hit in a third of an inning.

Both teams went scoreless after the first inning and in the top of the second, John Jay scored two runs in the second to take the early lead.  Axel Kappes III led off the inning with a single up the middle before moving to third on a double by Spallin. Agosta sent a grounder to third that scored Kappes III, giving the visitors the early lead. The next batter, Cherichella, roped a first-pitch double to right field that brought in Spallin doubling up the John Jay lead. 
 
In the bottom of the third, the Beavers took a 3-2 lead. Two straight hits gave CCNY runners on first and second as Cirigliano tripled to left center and cleared the bases to tie the game at 2-2.  Chasanov laced a single to left field that brought in Cirigliano, giving the Beavers a 3-2 lead. 

The Bloodhounds regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Anzalone sent a one-out single to center before Mauro singled to left field. Kappes III reached on a fielder's choice that moved Anzalone to third.  The next batter, Spallin, sent a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season that gave John Jay a 5-3 lead. 

CCNY answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Suprun tripled to right field which brought in two to tie the score at 5-5. Savino lofted a deep fly to centerfield as Suprun tagged from third and scored the go-ahead run for the Beavers. 

In the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds were down to the final out until Bowman doubled to left field and brought in Cherichella, who had singled, tying the game at 6-6. The next batter, Anzalone, connected on his second home run of the year, as John Jay reclaimed the lead, 8-6. The next batter, Mauro, belted a solo home run to right field, his second of the year. 

Michalski struck out the first batter of the inning on six pitches. Cirigliano reached on a single through the left side before stealing second. With two outs, Brenner doubled on the first pitch he saw to left field as Cirigliano raced around to cut the deficit down to 9-7. Michalski rebounded on the mound to get Suprun to pop up to the catcher, securing the first conference win of the season. 
 
Game 2 | John Jay 11, CCNY 5
John Jay scored in six of the seven innings and held off CCNY in the nightcap of the second game, as the Bloodhounds defeated the Beavers, 11-5, in a back-and-forth scoring affair. 

All nine Bloodhounds recorded a hit in the second game, with Spallin and Isaac Salazar each recording three hits in the contest. Anzalone continued his hot hitting, driving in three RBIs while Cherichella added two RBIs. Mauro, Spallin, Hayden Tackett, Agosta, and Salazar also added an RBI. 

Axel Kappes III (2-2) pitched his second complete game, allowing five runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out four batters. 

Cirigilano, Chasanov, Souther, and Lopez each had two hits for the Beavers with Chasanov recording two RBIs. Erik Rank (3-2) took the loss after yielding six runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings. 

CCNY opened the scoring as Chasanov sent an RBI double to right field, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Spallin kicked off the second inning with a single but was picked off at first for the first out. Cherichella doubled to left and tied the game when Hayden Tackett sent an RBI double to left field. The next batter, Agosta, reached on an infield single to short as Tackett hustled around the bases and scored on the throw, giving the Bloodhounds a 2-1 lead. 

CCNY answered back in their half of the second as Savino drew a walk and stole second. Colin Souther singled to left field, giving the Beavers runners on the corner. Bryan Lopez singled to center, plating Savino that tied the game at 2-2. 

The two teams continued to trade runs as in the top of the third, the Bloodhounds went ahead on the sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Cherichella that scored Anzalone, making it 3-2. Cirigliano doubled in the CCNY third and moved to third on a grounder from Brenner. Cirigliano scored the tying run after a successful steal of home, making it 3-3. 

The Bloodhounds created some separation in the top of the fourth, as Anzalone connected on his third home run of the season, a three-run shot to center that gave the visitors a three-run edge. The Beavers got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Budzinski flew out to center, scoring Lopez, who reached on a one-out triple to right. 

John Jay continued their hot-hitting approach at the plate. Spallin started the fifth with a double to right field before Cherichella singled to center, bringing in Spallin as the Bloodhounds led 7-4. Isaac Salazar singled to center field, scoring Cherichella made it 8-4, but was out trying to extend the single to a double. John Jay added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Jaxen Gangwish led off with a single to right, followed by a single from Bowman. 

With one out, Mauro sent an RBI single, scoring Gangwish, extending John Jay's lead to 9-4. The next batter, Spallin, continued his hot hitting, as he flew out to center, bringing in Bowman and increasing the visitors' lead to 10-4. 

The Beavers were able to get one back in the bottom of the sixth. Chasanov singled to right field that brought in DiBlasi, trimming the deficit in half, 10-5. 

In the seventh, Tackett and Agosta walked. Salazar flew out to center as Tackett advanced to third. The Bloodhounds added one more run as Agosta moved to second and Tackett stole home, making it 11-5. 

Kappes III got the first two men out before allowing a single from Souther. He refocused on the mound and got Lopez to ground out to short as Souther was forced at second to seal the win. 

John Jay returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 9 as they will travel to FDU-Florham for a 3:30 pm start.
