Baseball Holds Off Old Westbury's Late Rally For 7-6 Triumph On Thursday Afternoon

Old Westbury, NY - The John Jay baseball team raced out to a 5-2 lead before adding two more in their half of the fifth inning. The Old Westbury Panthers scored thrice and one more in the seventh as the Bloodhounds held on for the 7-6 win on Thursday.

Today's game was played at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Old Westbury's campus with the Bloodhounds serving as the home team. John Jay moves to 15-21 overall while Old Westbury falls to 14-18. 

Hayden Tackett powered the John Jay offense, going 2 for 3 while driving in four RBIs. Santo Anzalone and Anthony Agosta had a hit and were credited with an RBI. Jaxen Gangwish, Ryan Cherichella, Michael Mauro, Quentin Bowman, and Axel Kappes III all had a hit in the contest. 

Sean Lynch, toeing the mound for his first collegiate start, went six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out three in recording his first win of the season. Julio Reyes worked two-thirds of an inning before David Michalski came on for the final 2.1 frames, not allowing a run while walking one and striking out three for his third save of the year. 

Don Whalen recorded two hits for the visitors. Bradley Mateo, Nick Papageorge, Cayden Ysidro, David Garren, Jason Carrion, and Nick Giovanakis all drove in a run for the Panthers. Joseph Lubrano allowed five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings while walking six and striking out five in taking the loss. 

Lynch retired all three batters in the top of the first on nine pitches. Gangwish drew a walk before Cherichella singled through the left side. A walk to John Spallin loaded the bases for Anzalone. Behind in the count 0-1, Anzalone sent a single through the left side that scored Gangwish for the game's first run. Lubrano struck out Michael Mauro and Quentin BowmanThe next hitter, Agosta, worked the count in his favor and sent a single through the left side, scoring Cherichella for a 2-0 advantage. 

Old Westbury got on the board in the top of the third. Giovanaki singled up the middle before moving to second on the sacrifice bunt by Sean Erdmann. Mateo reached on a fielding error by Tackett and moved to second on the throw. Giovanaki advanced to third and scored on a fielding error by Anzalone. Papageorge doubled in Mateo to tie the game at 2-2. 

Lubrano walked Anzalone and Mauro to start the Bloodhound third. Bowman flew out to right field as Anzalone moved to third. Kappes III walked to load the bases. The next batter, Tackett, worked the count full and cleared the bases with a three-run double to left field, as John Jay claimed a 5-2 lead. 

The Bloodhounds added two more scores in the bottom of the fifth, upping the lead to 7-2. Mauro started the inning with a single up the middle before Bowman doubled down the left field line to move Mauro to third. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch as Mauro scored to make it 6-2. Two batters later, Tackett continued his hot streak at the plate, singling to right center that made it 7-2. 

Old Westbury narrowed the gap in the top of the sixth, sending eight batters to dish, scoring three runs and trailed 7-5. Ysidro singled through the right side that scored Whalen. 

A walk to Garren was the precursor for Carrion, who doubled down the left field line that brought in Ysidro. Giovanaki sent a fly out to center that plated Garren as the Panthers trailed by two. 

In the top of the seventh, Whalen doubled as Papageorge moved to third. Ysidro walked as the bases were loaded for Garren. He sent a deep drive to center as Papageorge tagged up and scored, cutting the lead down to one, 7-6. 

Michalski was back on the mound in the ninth. He got Papageorge to fly out on the first pitch he saw. Whalen walked before Michalski settled back to get Troy Emmanuel on a fly out to center and Garren struck out to end the contest. 

The Bloodhounds conclude the 2024 regular season on Saturday, May 4, as they will host Lehman at Naiomoli Ballpark on the campus of FDU-Florham. 

First-pitch is set for noon.
