Women's Soccer Blanks Old Westbury, 4-0, In 2024 Season Opener

Old Westbury, NY - The John Jay College women's soccer team shut out the College of Old Westbury, 4-0, on Saturday morning at Panther Park. It was the season opener for both teams.

Since 2010, John Jay now stands at 7-7 on opening day, extending their win streak to four straight with this morning's decision.

Newcomer Olivia Boucher netted her first two goals of her Bloodhound career. The transfer forward fired off 14 shots with eight of those chances making their way on target. Boucher joins Nora O'Connor (3 goals | 9/1/23) and Katie Healy (2 goals | 8/30/19) to score multiple goals in the season lidlifter.

Anna Wehr, appearing in her first collegiate match, got the scoring started late in the first half off the pass from Emma Fisher

Junior Mikaya Schoch netted John Jay's third goal of the contest. For the Nutley, NJ native, she now has 16 career goals. With her goal in the 79th minute, Schoch has now scored a goal on opening in each of her three seasons at John Jay.

Freshman goalkeeper Gianna Duarte notched her first collegiate and first cleansheet, making three saves. Duarte is the first Bloodhound keeper to register a shutout on opening day since Alexa Pyatsky and Lexi Reidenbaker combined on a shutout in a 4-0 victory over St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn back on September 3, 2022.

Jocelyn Forseth, Eleni Petri, and Edelyn Garcia each recorded a shot on goal for Old Westbury. Kristen Gallagher allowed the four goals while making ten saves for the Panthers.

Coach's Corner - Head Coach Ajani Clunie

"I am very pleased and proud of our team's effort this morning. We created several chances in the early portion of the match and capitalized before the half. In the second half, we made several adjustments which allowed us to play more freely and convert our opportunities."

Old Westbury took their first chance of the match as Petri fired a shot towards the bottom left of the goal but was turned aside by Duarte.

John Jay took back-to-back shot attempts as in the 23' Lucia Giangaspero sent a shot that was caught by Gallagher before Boucher took her first chance two minutes later. The Bloodhounds continued to be on the offensive, before being rewarded in the 42'. Fisher took the corner kick from the left side and fired one into the box that found the foot of Wehr, who beat Gallagher for the goal.

The visitors held an 8-3 advantage on shot attempts while taking five corners. The score remained that way until the Bloodhounds notched a pair of goals five minutes apart in taking a 3-0 lead. In the 75', Boucher was able to settle the ball in the middle of the box and blast a left-footed shot that got past Gallagher to put the visitors ahead, 2-0.

Four minutes later, Schoch gets her 16th career goal as the lead increased to 3-0.

The final tally came in the 84' as Boucher converted on a long attempt that bounced in the back of the net, just past the out-stretched reach of Gallagher.

The Bloodhounds will travel to St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn on Wednesday, September 4th. Kickoff from Aviator Sports Complex is set for 8:00 p.m.
