Women's Volleyball Secures Pair of Wins In First Home Tri-Match Of Season

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team extended their win streak to four straight, sweeping both matches of its first home tri-match against Old Westbury and Penn College.

The Bloodhounds defeated the Panthers 3-0 (25-11; 25-16, 25-13) before besting the Wildcats 3-0 (25-13; 28-26; 25-18).

In the middle contest, Penn College earned a 3-0 triumph over Old Westbury (25-21; 25-18; 25-21).

John Jay 3, Old Westbury 0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-13)

First Set - John Jay commenced the opening set with seven straight points as newcomer Theresa Schmitt produced a pair of aces early on. An attack error by Lewis put Old Westbury on the board but it was all Bloodhounds from there, outscoring the Panthers, 18-10, down the stretch to secure the set win. The Bloodhounds hit .185 in the opening set while limiting Old Westbury to -.200. John Jay had 12 in the opener and six service aces, three coming from Schmitt.

Second Set - Similar to the first set, the Bloodhounds came out with four straight points, capped by a Madison Reyes ace. Old Westbury got to within five, 16-11, following a kill from Stephanie Maser. John Jay answered with a 6-0 run, building a 22-11 advantage. Meghan Smith sent a furious serve that was mishit by Maser. Old Westbury stayed in the match, scoring three of the next four points to trail 23-16 on a service error. Kristin Gretener closed the set with an ace. The Bloodhounds hit a robust .536 in the second set, only committing two errors on 28 attempts and racking up 17 kills.

Third Set - The Bloodhounds entered the third set on a hot start, staging five straight points with Ellmedina Hodzic recording two aces, the second of which gave John Jay the 5-0 lead. John Jay doubled up their lead, 18-9, on another ace from Hodzic. Old Westbury rattled off three points before a kill from Nina Bongiovanni. Bongiovanni added a second kill before Schmitt served an ace to set up match point. An attack error from Geanelle Sam ended the match as John Jay earned their sixth win of the season.

John Jay hit .395 for the match while holding the visitors to just -.018. Lewis led the way with 10 kills, two digs, and a block. Bongiovanni concluded the game with eight kills and three digs. Gretener paced the Bloodhounds with seven digs while Schmitt had six. Smith registered 22 assists while Hodzic and Schmitt each had three aces.

Old Westbury was led by Maser, who had six kills. Sam tallied nine digs while Mariana Gamez had five assists.

John Jay 3, Penn College 0 (25-13, 28-26, 25-18)

First Set- Both teams traded points in the early portion of the first set before the Bloodhounds seized control of the momentum. A bad set by Kathryn Burnett ignited a 10-0 run. Malia Reyes held serve for the Bloodhounds, recording three aces, the last helped the lead swell to 16-6. The reigning CUNYAC Player of the Year Lewis closed the set with back-to-back aces. The Bloodhounds continued their consistent hitting, converting at a .355 clip in the first set while holding Penn College to just .133.

Second Set - One of the closest sets on the day, John Jay opened the set with three straight points, two coming off service aces from Ellmedina Hodzic. The visitors staged an 8-4 run taking an 8-7 lead following a service error. The lead never extended past four with John Jay holding a 19-15 lead following an ace from Leah Kaplan. The Wildcats used an 8-4 run to tie the set at 23 following a kill from Nevaeh Ward. Rylea Sandel recorded a kill of her own to give John Jay a 24-23 advantage. Penn College nearly took the set following an ace from Hailey DeBrody but a Hodzic killed the potential set point, Ward gave the Eagles a second chance but Reilly Catan recorded the kill. Kaplan sealed the set with an ace as John Jay went up 2-0.

Third Set- John Jay found themselves with a 10-5 lead. Penn College was able to climb back in the set, trailing by three, 13-0, but back-to-back kills from Hailey Waugaman and Lewis seized a five-point lead for the home team. The Bloodhounds scored ten of the final 18 points.

Lewis finished with a double-double in this match, leading the way with 11 kills and 10 digs. Sandel added nine kills while Catan had eight kills and 7 digs. Malia Reyes had four aces and eight digs.

The Bloodhounds commence conference play on September 19 as they will take on defending league champions, Hunter, in a rematch of last year's finale. First-serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
