Visiting Delaware Valley Spoils Men's Soccer's Home Opener On Monday Afternoon

New York, NY - For the first time in 2024, the John Jay men's soccer team was home at Randall's Island for their home opener but the homecoming was spoiled as the Bloodhounds dropped a 1-0 decision to the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies on Monday afternoon.

This afternoon's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools as John Jay now falls to 1-3-0 overall while Delaware Valley moves to 5-2 on the season.

The Bloodhounds applied pressure in the opening moments of the contest as Kelvin De La Cruz fired a shot from the left that was stopped by Aiden Lane.

John Jay had two more chances, a minute apart. First, Alejandro De Jesus' header sailed wide before Brayan Alvarez's chance was also misdirected wide of the target.

In the 17', DelVal's Roy Hevener took the corner kick and sent a cross into the box that was settled by Danny Henson. His attempt was thwarted by a Bloodhound defender twice before Jacob Luciani booted a ball that Solis turned aside.

In the 22', newcomer Marcel Tovar beat his defender along on the left and dribbled the ball towards the near post, but his chance was stopped by Lane, keeping the match scoreless.

Three minutes later, Daniel Rosa sent a shot that Lane made the save on. In the 30', the visitors regained the ball as Ernort George II headed a shot, but Solis made the stand-up save.

Delaware Valley nearly scored the game's first goal as Hevener blasted a long free kick that grazed the fingertips of Solis before banging off the crossbar. The visitors continued to display an offensive barrage as in the 42' Nathan Congdon's shot went wide before Prince Mugisha fired on a minute later that Solis was able to stop.

Just before halftime, Amos Debah booted the free kick to the left but found Solis' waiting arms. Solis made five saves in the opening 45 while his counterpart Lane was credited with three saves.

When play resumed for the second half, Davio Rossi-Levin got his turn in goal. Delaware Valley got what turned out to be the eventual game-winner in the 60'.

Mugisha created space on the attack and spotted his teammate Henson, who blasted a right-footed shot that hit the right inside the post before trickling to the back of the net for the first goal of the game.

The visitors looked poised to get a second goal in the 63' as Williams Paulson sent a shot, but Rossi-Levin was ready for it.

John Jay had a chance in the 79 as De La Cruz fired off a shot but Lane was there for the save. The Aggies again had a near goal-scoring chance, as Henson's shot hit the post following a 2-on-1 breakaway.

The Bloodhounds feverishly tried to get the game-tying score. Alvarez found himself with some space and fired a shot, but Lane was there for the stop.

For the match, De La Cruz, Alvarez, and Tovar each had two shots in the contest with De La Cruz leading the way with two shots on goal.

Rossi-Levin finished with two saves on 12 shots faced while Solis stopped five shots on nine chances.

John Jay will be back in action on Wednesday, September 18, as they will be the first game of a doubleheader with the women's team, as they will host the University of Saint Joseph at Randall's Island - Field 74 at 3:30 p.m.
