Women's Volleyball Secures First Conference Win of the Season

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team got back in the win column on Thursday night with the Bloodhounds' first conference win of the season.

The Bloodhounds crossed the East River to face the Brooklyn College Bulldogs for the first time this season, walking away with a three-set victory. The win improves the Bloodhounds' record in CUNYAC conference play to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Madison Reyes scored the opening point with the first kill of the first set, the Bloodhounds trail for the majority of the set.

A combined 14 service errors and attack errors in the opener put the visitors behind the proverbial eight ball, but the Bloodhounds locked at the end of the first set.

Trailing 13-20, the John Jay attack rattled off 12 consecutive points to steal a win in the opening set and set the tone for the match. Seven of the 12 points in that stretch were kills, four of them by Josanne Lewis. Reilly Catan came up with three service aces from behind the line to help clinch the win.

The crucial final stretch bumped the Bloodhounds' team hitting percentage to .237 for the set, its highest in any set on Thursday night.

Bulldog errors put the Bloodhounds in front early in the second set, resulting in a 6-2 lead, but a string errors at the net and behind the service line, put Brooklyn back in front, 13-11. John Jay scored the final five points of the match after chipping away at the Bulldog lead to go up two sets to none.

Brooklyn finished the set with a match-high ten attack errors.

John Jay's second unit picked up where the first unit left off to kick off the third set. Lewis and Julia Stuart sandwiched a 5-0 run to start the set, picking up their first kills of the final frame.

Errors of all kinds continued to hamper the Bulldogs, allowing the Bloodhounds to increase their advantage throughout the set. Paige Sadowitz, Reilly Catan and Lewis all earned a kill in another five-point stretch that put the Bloodhounds in a great position, 21-15, to clinch the sweep.

Catan secured the win with her ninth kill of the night, taking the third set, 25-19.

Josanne Lewis finished the match as the kill leader for either side, successfully converting 14 swings on 27 attempts (.333). She added 19 digs and one block.

Reilly Catan led all players with four aces, adding nine kills and eight digs.

Meghan Smith finished top of the leader board with 22 assists.
