Men's Soccer Falls To Old Westbury Late, 2-1, In Season Opener On Tuesday Afternoon

Old Westbury, NY - The John Jay College men's soccer team held firm to a 1-0 lead, thanks to an early goal from Daniel Rosa but in the later stages of the match, Old Westbury notched a pair of goals four minutes apart to edge John Jay, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the Bloodhounds' season opener while Old Westbury improved to 1-1 in the young season.

Rosa and Tovar worked the give-and-go along the right side of the pitch as Tovar dribbled wide, allowing Rosa to run up the middle and find his foot as the Lisbon, Portugal native beat Paul DeGennaro to his left, giving the Bloodhounds the early advantage.

Old Westbury had a pair of chances early in the first half as Roobens Celine and Ruben Teixeria each fired shots on goal that John Jay netminder Tyler Solis stifled, keeping the match knotted at 0-0.
The visitors were held to just two shots in the opening 45 while the Panthers blasted eight chances with Celine and Teixeria accounting for the shots on target against Solis.

In the 59', Old Westbury was awarded a free kick as Tiago Tirado's attempt missed right of the goal.   In their first attempt against newcomer Davio Rossi-Levin, Henrik Ropstad set a low-lining shot that found Rossi-Levin for his first collegiate save.

The Bloodhounds threatened for more in the 81' as Brayan Alvarez booted a chance but was denied by DeGennaro.

Old Westbury evened the match at 1-1 in the 83' as Ropstad received the pass from Ashel Santos, firing a shot to the upper right portion of the net. Four minutes later, Celine scored what turned out to be the game-winner after Santos found him.

For the match, John Jay was held to four shots (two on goal) while Old Westbury recorded 15 shots (five shots on goal). Solis made two stops in the first half before yielding to Rossi-Levin, who made one save. Rosa finished with two shots (one on goal) while Sebastian Leja attempted a shot. DeGennaro made one save in while playing the full 90 for Old Westbury. Ropstad and Celine each had five shots and a goal apiece.

Matteo Baldassi, Leja, Alejandro De Jesus, Daniel Mansur, Tovar, and Karl Menuau each made their first collegiate for the Bloodhounds this afternoon. Rossi-Levin and Aaron Cedillo each made their season debuts.

The Bloodhounds will head Upstate to tangle with SUNY Canton on September 6 before finishing the road trip at SUNY Potsdam on September 7.
