Men's Soccer Picks Up First Win Of 2024; 1-0 Over SUNY Canton

Canton, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team kicked off their two-game tour of Upstate New York with a 1-0 win over SUNY Canton on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Bloodhounds move to 1-1 on the season while the Kangaroos falter to 0-3 to start the season.

Daniel Rosa netted what turned out to be the game-winner for his second goal of the season.

Newcomer Davio Rossi-Levin earned his first start of the year, and recorded his first clean sheet, making ten saves on 20 shots faced.

John Bustamante led the way for the Roos with five shots, three of which were on target. Owen Lebron had four shots while Michael Gallette had three shots on the afternoon. Jason Vela made one stop on seven shots faced for SUNY Canton.

Rossi-Levin was tested early in the contest as Mason Holmes headed a shot that found the arms of the Bloodhounds' goalkeeper. SUNY Canton continued to apply pressure as Chris Escobar and Markel Mosley each sent a shot high before Brandon Ardon blasted a shot in the 16' that found Rossi-Levin.

John Jay converted on their chance in the 26' as Karl Menuau sent a through ball that found the foot of Brayan Alvarez before Alvarez delivered a perfect feed to Rosa for the goal. Rossi-Levin continued to come up with crucial stops for the Bloodhounds. Two minutes into the second half, Lebron located the loose ball and fired a shot that was tossed aside. Gavette attempted a shot that Rossi-Levin denied, keeping SUNY Canton off the scoreboard.

In the 72', Eric Randall headed a chance but Rossi-Levin continued his dominant performance in net, making his tenth save of the match. As the clock continued to wind down, Matthew Brandes put a shot on net, but the John Jay defenders were able to make the save in defense of their keeper.

Alvarez nearly put John Jay ahead 2-0 but was stopped by Vela.

The Bloodhounds conclude the Upstate New York tour on Saturday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m. as they square off against SUNY Potsdam.
